    Rubicon Brewing Company is looking for a Director of Brewing Operations.

    Job Title: Director of Brewing Operations (DBO)

    Summary: Responsible for forming, leading and inspiring a growing brewhouse team and for all process and procedures necessary to produce and dispense high quality beer. Duties include, but are not limited to: Management of staff; raw material management and handling; brewhouse, fermentation and cellar operations; fining and filtration; yeast propogation and wort handling; CIP processes; record keeping, reporting and information management; forecasting and planning; attending relevant meetings; housekeeping; sanitation; employment of proper safety equipment; education and interaction with Rubicon staff and customers. Represent the Rubicon Brewing Company at various off-site and Brewery/Brewpub events.

    The DBO must possess:
    • Great passion and enthusiasm for craft beer, brewing, creating recipes, and researching and applying new techniques.
    • Strong leadership, organization and time-management skills.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Strong sense of responsibility both inside and outside the brewery.
    • Ability to work and communicate well with others in both the production and administrative sides of the brewery.
    • Extensive knowledge and experience with most if not all beer styles.
    • Strong vision and desire to produce award-winning beer.
    • Ability to design traditional and non-traditional beer recipes that will excite our ever-growing fanbase.
    • Strong mechanical background and ability to troubleshoot/repair mechanical issues in brewery setting.
    • Ability and willingness to adopt new processes/practices and/or beer-styles.
    • Ability to source and maintain raw materials inventories and contracts.
    • Ability to source and maintain cooperage.
    • Experience working in a brewery lab (yeast propogation, etc.).
    • Experience working with a 10 bbl brewhouse, or larger.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Leads and assists in the brewing process, fermentation and cellar.
    • Understands completely all policies, procedures, standards, specifications, guidelines and training programs of the Rubicon Brewing Company.
    • Produces high quality Rubicon beer consistently and in accordance with recipes and brewing procedures.
    • Attends production meetings and contributes to product improvement. Works directly with Rubicon managers to plan and schedule beer production (weekly), education and brewery events/competitions.
    • Plans, schedules and monitors the flow of product through all systems and maintains adequate beer levels (especially Rubicon flagship brews) and raw materials inventory.
    • Identifies shortfalls and monitors operational performance in support of the production schedule and plan.
    • Monitors and performs all quality control (QC) parameters and checks through the beer’s process.
    • Manages production staff in the performing their duties; provides direction and assistance. Works closely with brewing team to achieve desired quality and production targets.
    • Keeps complete, accurate and timely inventory and quality management of beer in process, finished/packaged product, raw materials and chemicals. Works with the Warehouse, Packaging and Shipping Manager (WPSM) to conduct a thorough inventory on the last working day of the month.
    • Keeps complete, accurate and timely records/documentation of brewing activities.
    • Maintains detailed records (daily) of raw materials usage, quality checks and production tracking per Rubicon procedures and Federal requirements.
    • Completes and submits (on time) accurate TTB Brewer’s Report of Operations, TTB Excise Tax Return and any other required reports per Federal Requirements.
    • Follows all safety procedures. Safely use a wide variety of power and hand tools.
    • Periodic handling of hazardous chemicals.
    • Ensures the equipment is setup, maintained, and operated to allow for efficient and safe production of quality product.
    • Ensures cleanliness and organization of equipment and facility. Continually maintains all beer production areas (including raw material and finished good storage areas and spent grain area as well as all walkways and driveways around or leading to brewhouse and cellar) in a clean and orderly condition, returns tools, equipment and supplies to their appropriate storage areas after each assignment, and ensures that all equipment is kept clean and kept in excellent working condition through personal inspection and by following the Brewery’s preventative maintenance programs.
    • Creates new recipes for seasonal and specialty beers.
    • Leads, teaches, and inspires staff to always be improving processes.
    • Leads in development and training of Rubicon staff as it relates to beer and brewery education.
    • Works with Rubicon managers to develop forecasts of future production (annually) and determine hop and malt purchase/contract requirements.
    • Works with Rubicon managers and staff to promote the Brewery.
    • Willingness and ability to perform any other ancillary jobs/roles within the Brewery.
    • Review performance and goals quarterly with Glynn and Krieg over beers (provided by employee).

    Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises all employees working in the breweries (Stillwater production brewery and Capitol brewpub). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and minimum of 5 years of experience in a brewpub/production brewery; or equivalent combination of education from an accredited brewing school(s) and/or other beer-related education (i.e., Siebel, Davis Beer Judge Certification Program, Cicerone) and experience. Fully understands and complies with all Federal, State, ABC, county and municipal regulations that pertain to health, safety, alcoholic beverage laws, labor requirements of the restaurant, employees and guests. Should have an advanced understanding of brewing science as well as excellent organizational, verbal communication and safe chemical handling skills as well as a strong mechanical aptitude with knowledge of machinery and systems; must also have a strong work ethic, a diligent habit of paying attention to detail, and a maniacal focus on cleanliness, safety, and organization of equipment, lab, and facility.

    Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence; Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers and other employees of the organization.

    Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

    Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Computer Skills: Must be computer literate and have familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word and Excel). To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of and ability to utilize and manage brewery production software.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A current CA driver’s license and proof of auto insurance are required; must be a certified forklift operator; must be 21 years of age.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 55 pounds, be comfortable working at heights while standing on ladders, and be comfortable working in tight/cramped spaces and/or awkward positions for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
