Brouwerij West – Assistant Brewer
Assistant Brewer for New Packaging Brewery in Los Angeles (San Pedro), California
Brouwerij West is seeking an assistant brewer for its new packaging brewery that is planned to open summer 2015 in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles. After 4+ years of brewing and growing our company, we are finally building a brewery. Our unique location in The Port of Los Angeles is on a 7 acre property with two WWII-era warehouses. Our warehouse space is over 26,000 square feet and will include a full packaging brewery, tasting bar, future café and a huge outdoor beer garden.
We are looking for an assistant brewer with production brewery experience and an interest in mixed fermentation, wild fermentation, and traditional Belgian production.
Job Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• Operating the brewhouse on a day-to-day basis
• Ensuring consistent quality beer production
• Developing new beers
• Selecting ingredients and procuring supplies for production and handling raw materials
• Managing beer production schedules
• Executing a meticulous quality control program
• Supervising beer production employees
• Maintaining a safe and immaculately clean work environment
• Participating in events, festivals, and other marketing activities, both on- and off-site
Minimum Qualifications:
Our ideal candidate should possess the following Experience:
• Ideally, 1 year of experience in a packaging brewery, with an intimate knowledge of all brewery operations and the brewing process, including: brewing chemistry and process, malting, European hop varieties, fermentation, yeast management, recipe creation, packaging, quality control, loss prevention, preventative maintenance, sanitation, microbiology, and inventory management.
Our ideal candidate should possess the following Attributes:
• Fluency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Testing, measurement, and record-keeping are important to us in ensuring quality consistent beer production.
• Entrepreneurial nature and meticulous attention to detail.
• A love for craft beer, especially Belgian styles.
• A desire to have fun (while certain things must be kept formal, we also like to keep things light whenever we can).
Brewing is demanding physically and mentally. As such, candidates should be prepared for and capable of long hours and intense physical activity. Our ideal candidate should possess the following Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to consistently lift overhead and move at least 55 pounds repeatedly.
• Ability to reach frequently with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl on hard surfaces and in small, confined spaces, and climb stairs and ladders.
• Ability to operate a forklift safely.
• Ability to work in an environment that may be wet and is not climate controlled, and be exposed to strong and sometimes disagreeable odors and handle concentrated chemicals.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule and work standing for as much as 8+ hours per day.
