    Karbach Brewing Company is looking for a seasoned, brewing professional to join our rapidly growing team as Head Brewer. The ideal candidate should have at least 10 years of experience working in medium to large breweries. Additionally, the successful candidate should have a degree in brewing or food sciences. The head brewer will have direct oversight of the brewhouse and cellar teams and will report to the brewmaster. This is a very hands-on position that will have some clerical work, but our admin and QA teams are responsible for managing most of the regulatory, compliance and production data. The Head Brewer will have a major role in new product launches, R & D, capital expense projects and shaping the production side of the organization.

    Karbach is located in Houston, TX and has grown to be one of the top craft breweries in the Southeastern U.S. and has the number one selling IPA in Houston. The brewery will sell over 50,000 bbl. of beer this year and should do over 70,000 in 2016. We just installed a brand new, 120 bbl fully automated German brewhouse, along with supporting cold block.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Management of day-to-day wort production
    • Oversight of cellar operations including fermentation, finishing and yeast management
    • Work closely with Brewmaster, Operations Manager and Packaging Manager to schedule work, process and materials flows
    • Collaborate with Brewmaster, Operations Manager and Engineering Manager on plant expansions and equipment upgrade projects
    • Recruit, train, motivate, schedule and manage brewhouse and cellar staff
    • Improve processes, product quality and safety throughout the brewery
    • Contribution to new product development ideas and oversight of R & D projects as they are implemented at scale
    • Work with and select raw materials and equipment vendors in conjunction with brewmaster
    • Work with operations manager and accounting team to manage raw materials inventories
    • Modify recipes and processes as needed to ensure product quality and consistency
    • Author new and edit existing SOPs and implement systems to ensure brewers are performing in compliance with processes
    • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols

    Experience, background and personality

    • 10 years of experience working in breweries of at least 100,000 bbl. annual output, with 5 years management or significant supervisory experience
    • Brewery experience should be in wort production and/or fermentation
    • University level degree in brewing or fermentation science. Food science degrees may be considered, along with microbiology, chemistry or relevant applied science degrees
    • Experience working with PCS software and automation packages, including troubleshooting
    • Proven ability to improve quality and efficiency in brewing and fermentation processes
    • Experience adjusting recipes and processes depending on fluctuations in raw materials quality and equipment changes
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills; computer savvy (must be proficient in Excel)
    • Willing and able to act as brewery spokesperson at tastings, beer dinners, industry events, etc.
    • Authorship of SOPs, policies and other educational/training materials
    • Mindset that is rooted in plant safety, high quality, efficiency, and organizational accountability
    • Strong drive to for constant improvement of processes and product quality
