    Job Description
    The Head Brewer is a full-time salaried position. Specific responsibilities include:


    • Operations
    Carryout the day-to-day operations of the brewhouse, cellar and packaging areas.
    Cellar-work includes yeast management, tank and equipment CIP/sanitation, keg cleaning, filtration, racking, carbonation & fermenter additions.
    Packaging involves keg filling.

    Operate brewery equipment to maintain acceptable inventory levels of raw materials, brewing supplies and finished beer. Help select ingredients and procure supplies.
    Participate in management discussions regarding forecasting and general brewery operations planning.
    Collaborate on the formulation and development of new beer recipes.
    Ensure consistency and a high-level of quality in the production of the company’s beers.
    Responsible for the cleanliness & sanitation of all equipment, tanks and work areas.
    Make recommendations on process improvements and new equipment purchases.
    Help in the installation of new brewing and packaging equipment.
    Keep brewery clean and well-organized.
    Comply with all safety and health codes.

    • Training & Professional Development
    Help train assistant brewers and packaging staff to work at a level consistent with brewery production.
    Maintain working beer knowledge and tasting panel experience.

    • Marketing/Public Relations
    As needed, be available to represent the brewery, its brands, and beers to the public in a variety of forums, including festivals, focus groups, tap room appearances, new style releases, charitable events, brewery tours and beer dinners.

    Working Conditions:
    • Industrial setting, with frequent exposure to the following:
    Moving mechanical parts and equipment.
    Wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
    Common brewing industry chemicals and gases.
    Fumes or airborne particles.
    Loud noises.

    • Physical work setting
    Ability to work on your feet for hours at a time in an uncontrolled (hot/cold) climate.
    Ability to climb stairs, fit into tight spaces, and work on ladders and lifts.
    Ability to move freely. Including, but not limited to: walking, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, etc.
    Ability to lift 55 lbs. from ground to shoulder height, move kegs, and operate forklift/hand truck.

    • Weekend or evening work, as needed.

    The ideal candidate will have the following:
    • Two plus years’ experience as a brewer or first assistant in a production (i.e. packaging into bottles or cans) craft brewery.
    • A Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in science or engineering. Or equivalent brewery/brewing experience.
    • Formal brewing education at one of the leading brewing schools. Or equivalent brewery/brewing experience.

    • MUST be a “self-starter”: a high-energy driven individual who shows a high degree of initiative.
    • MUST have good communication and project management skills.
    • MUST be mechanically inclined: fundamental knowledge of plumbing, steam, electricity and machinery mechanics/maintenance. Ability to logically dissect a problem and work with others to solve the problem at hand.
    • MUST demonstrate problem-solving skills and the ability to know when additional assistance is needed.

    • Ability to work and communicate well with supervisors, staff, customers and outside parties.
    • Computer expertise and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.), Google Docs, and other software programs.

    • A positive attitude with the desire to learn, grow, and take on increased responsibility. As a start up brewery, we all wear many hats. Everyone is expected to “jump in” and help out where needed.

    • Experience brewing a broad range of beer recipe styles.
    • Be well organized and detail-oriented.
