Head Brewer – Bent Paddle Brewing Co.
The focus of the Head Brewer position is to manage all aspects of day to day brewery operations to ensure optimal efficiency, quality control, profitability and production management. Lead and manage brew house, cellar, packaging, maintenance and operational scheduling, working closely with our Lead Brewer and Director of Brewing. We have a DME 30bbl, 4 vessel brew house, 4 - 90bbl and 8 - 120bbl Fermenters, 4 – 120bbl Brite Tanks, Centrifuge, and 4 head Wild Goose canning line. The brewery also has a Taproom on –site, open 5 days a week.
Bent Paddle is located 2 hours north of the Twin Cities in the beautiful port town of Duluth, MN, on the shore of Lake Superior. Duluth has access to 10% of the world’s fresh water – which is one of the many reasons we are so proud of our beer. Our city and the North Shore have an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities; biking the Duluth Traverse, hiking the Superior Hiking Trail, Paddling the big lake and BWCAW and many more adventures. Our city is thriving and is full of energy.
Responsibilities:
Plan, organize and direct all aspects of brewing and packaging
Production, logistics and operational efficiencies
Brew house, cellar and packaging schedule (staff scheduling)
Report to and work with Director of Brewing Operations on brewery growth and future staffing needs
Provide support, guidance and training to brewery staff
Conduct annual brewer reviews with input from ownership
Manage weekly inventory levels and product availability
Manage production and packaging tracking/ reporting
Complete scheduled brewing shifts
Oversee and execute equipment maintenance, troubleshoot as needed
Manage raw material inventory and purchasing
Point person for brewery raw material suppliers
Work with Director of Brewing to provide input on annual contracts for raw material acquisition
Work with Director of Brewing on recipe development
Oversee and improve upon existing QA/QC program to ensure highest quality and consistency of product
Continuously innovate to improve operational and brewing practices, processes and controls (standardize and create SOP’s)
Manage daily production data entry in Orchestrated Beer
Manage brewery safety and OSHA compliance
Work with Director of Brewing to complete all aspects of TTB reporting.
Manage overall brewery organization and cleanliness
Participate in Bent Paddle events with staff ensuring the brewery is represented with professionalism and passion.
Qualifications:
Minimum 8 years professional brewing experience
Bachelor's degree in associated field with lab work preferred
Completion of a formally recognized Brewing Program strongly preferred
Experience managing a team of employees
Passion to manage a rapidly growing MN brewery
Experience using a centrifuge a plus
Proficient in word processing, statistical, organizational, and computing is a must
Ability to complete accurate and legible paperwork, attention to detail is key
Outstanding communication and problem solving skills, including equipment troubleshooting
Practical knowledge of SOP development and maintenance, safe operating practices and industry accepted quality standards
