    Brewery Assistant Job Description and Duties.
    Please Note: This Job Description is neither definitive nor restrictive and may be modified to meet changing needs of our fast passed, exciting work environment.

    We are seeking an upbeat, forward-thinking Brewery Assistant to assist with daily production functions in the brew house, cellar, and packaging. Ideal candidates may have commercial brewing and/or manufacturing experience, but may be on the job training for the right candidate.
    Duties include but are not limited to the following:
    1. Maintain proficiency in at least two of the following production areas: brewhouse, cellar, and/or packaging. The ability to function effectively in all three areas is considered a plus for the employee.
    2. Work week is based on a 40 hour schedule. Due to production needs, incidental overtime may be required.
    3. Ability to work a flexible schedule including all three shifts.
    4. Assist with the loading of raw materials and process aids in the product at various production stages.
    5. Assist in maintaining a clean, neat, and safe work area.
    6. Set up hoses, fittings, and clamps as required for production and cleaning operations.
    7. Assist with the performance of production operations, CIP’s, and sanitation practices with strict adherence to SOP’s set forth in training.
    8. Perform basic maintenance task on pumps, valves, tanks and process equipment.
    9. Ability to lift 60 pounds and to move 165 pounds.
    10. Embrace a process of and opportunities for continual improvement.

    A. Daily duties.
    1. Take level readings on the serving tanks.
    2. Monitor gravity decrease in fermenters.
    3. Monitor pressure build up in fermenters.
    4. Monitor quality and temperature of fermenting beers.
    5. Monitor quality, flavor and carbonation of serving beers.
    6. Monitor usage of serving beers.
    7. Filter finished beer when beer is aged enough in the fermenter.
    8. Keg off the old beer in the server.
    9. Brew beer when a fermenter is empty.
    10. Manage and monitor everything listed below.
    11. Rearrange production schedule as necessary daily.
    12. Reschedule Assistant Brewer’s time as necessary.
    B. Weekly duties.
    1. Lab work.
    2. Verify beer lines were cleaned, or clean them.
    3. Aid in execution of brew/filter/bottling production schedule.
    4. Fill out and fax Weekly Beer Management Report.
    C. Bi-monthly duties. (Future addition)
    1. Clean out silo.
    2. Take delivery of pale malt in silo.
    D. Quarterly duties.

    2. Take delivery of specialty malt. Verify order and sort by type for future inventory taking.
    3. Deep-clean outsides of tanks, floors, etc.
    E. Semi-annual duties.
    1. See the Seasonal Maintenance and Cleaning Schedule for a more complete list.
    2. Preventative maintenance acid washing and re-passivation of all tanks. (Including mash screens and DE Filter.) 3. Take butterfly valves apart for cleaning.
    F. Irregularly scheduled duties.
    1. Attend and work at beer festivals, promoting Steelhead/Bulldog. (Get everything ready – beer, jockey box, CO2, coasters, banner, displays & literature.)
    2. Talk to the media.
    3. Talk to the public (our customers or people passing through).
    5. Personally answer inquiries from microbrew enthusiasts. 6. Give tours
    9. Read brewing periodicals to keep up with technology.
    OTHER DUTIES
    G. Manage Supplies.
    1. Keep track of beer raw materials. (malt, hops, yeast, fruit, etc.)
    2. Keep track of brewing supplies. (bungs, D.E., filter cartridges, chemicals, etc.)
    3. Keep track of lab supplies. (alcohol burner fluid, agar media, test tubes, etc.)
    4. Keep track of safety supplies. (rubber boots & gloves, band aids, goggles, etc.)
    H. Beer Production.
    1. Assist in keeping all beers on tap at all times.
    2. Produce finished beer for the taproom.
    3. Produce kegged beer for accounts.
    4. Brew, filter, keg, and bottle according to the above schedule.
    I. Ordering. (Develop relationship with suppliers, get best prices, etc.)
    1. Raw materials.
    2. Brewing supplies.
    3. Lab supplies.
    4. Safety supplies.
    5. Supplies for the bar. (To-go bottles, caps, box set-ups, filling tubes.)
    6. Kegs and Taps.
    9. Office supplies. (sometimes)
    10. Service suppliers. (beer line cleaning, etc.)
    J. Cleaning Schedules.

    2. General cleaning of fermenters and servers.
    3. Preventative maintenance cleaning of fermenters, servers, kettle, liquor back, mash tun, filter, keg washer, etc.
    4. Kegs.
    5. Party taps.
    6. Exterior of tanks and brewery walls.
    7. Floors and drains.
    8. Mill room.
    K. Trouble Shooting.
    1. Preventative maintenance.
    2. Invent gadgets and apparatus to get the job done.
    3. Fix anything that breaks, if you can. Assist Production manager, fellow employees, in anyway you can.
    This is a trainee position. Prior experience is a definite plus, but not required. Pay and compensation will depend on experience. The successful employee in this position in time, with satisfactory progress will promote from Brewery Assistant to Brewer/Assistant Brewer.
