  • Brewery Operations Manager/Head Brewer Position at Haw River Farmhouse Ales

Haw River Farmhouse Ales is a small, family-owned craft brewery located in Saxapahaw, North Carolina, a progressive little village smack dab in the middle of rural Alamance County. Our brewery strives to bridge the gap between delicious craft beer and locally-grown, unique ingredients by working directly with farmers and growers to source responsibly-grown ingredients for many of our unique, innovative, and exploratory beers.

In our first couple of years, Haw River Farmhouse Ales has become known for producing high quality “traditionally unique” styles (let’s call them “Belgian-inspired, but locally fine-tuned”) like our hop-forward Newlin’s Original Belgian Oatmeal Pale, our smooth, roasty St. Benedict’s Breakfast Dubbel, a dry-hopped spelt farmhouse ale we call our Mille Fleur Rustic Saison and Regent’s Rye Tripel, brewed only with barley & rye grown and malted here in North Carolina. Alongside these core brands, we brew seasonals and one-offs that recently include our Cotton Pickin’ Farmhouse IPA, a foeder-aged brettanomyces Double IPA, a 10% ABV hop- and honey-forward Strong Golden we call Sun Hands, a watermelon rind & white tea sour blonde ale aged in wine barrels called Pound of Flesh, and our JavaQue Cream Stout, a coffee milk stout made with base malt smoked at our neighborhood butcher shop.

Heading into our second full year, we’re currently self-distributing to the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) and the Triad region (Greensboro, High Point, Winston Salem), with intermittent deliveries to Charlotte, Asheville & Wilmington as well. We are currently producing 1000+ barrels annually and are poised to experience a two- or three-fold expansion in production within the next 18 months as we add tanks and barrels, eventually expanding our distribution reach across the state.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced brewing professional to collaboratively lead a small team of passionate people. This team member will operate both a 10bbl production brewhouse and a 2bbl pilot system, and must possess a devotion for clean fermentation, mixed fermentation and sour beers, and barrel-aged beers. The ideal candidate will possess a desire for both self-conceptualization and collaborative work on innovative recipes that include and highlight unique ingredients. This person should be flexible, nimble and creative, possessing the ability to think on his or her feet to creatively solve problems and establish innovative solutions to unique ideas.

The optimal candidate will possess the following qualities:
    • An unwavering passion for creating beautiful beer and being a part of our local craft beer community
    • A work ethic that encapsulates a “start to finish” outlook with a focus on detail and thoroughness
    • The ability to collaboratively work within multiple teams
    • Embracing and achieving both short- & long-term goals
    • Impeccable judgement, professional maturity, and unwavering integrity
    • A motivated self-starter with a resourceful nature
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Technical savvy with the ability to keep detailed records and use applications, systems and operational programs effectively
    • Effective time management and personal organization skills
    • Unwavering opinion that The Who's "Quadrophenia" is, hands down, the best concept album ever produced
    • Strong leadership & management skills, along with the ability to earn the trust and support of a capable team
    • A passion for working with local growers & suppliers to source ingredients where possible and for exploring interesting & unorthodox ingredients for producing unique beer recipes
    • A diploma or certificate in Brewing or Fermentation Sciences from a recognized brewing school and/or at least 3 years professional brewing experience
    • Proficiency working in a commercial setting with a variety of yeast and bacteria strains, and maintaining both a mixed culture and clean barrel-aging program
    • An enthusiastic appreciation for Mr. Louis Gossett, Jr.'s stellar performance in 1983's Jaws 3.
    • Demonstrated proficiency and vocabulary in sensory & analysis, beer styles, and draught systems
    • Willingness to assist all areas of the company, from brewhouse management and equipment maintenance to festival participation and packaging efforts.

    Regular duties will include:
    • Ensuring & maintaining a clean, sanitary, and presentable work environment
    • Operation & maintenance of a 10bbl, two-vessel Premier Stainless brewhouse
    • CIP/Sani and maintenance of 20bbl fermenters, 30hl oak foeders and 20bbl brite tanks
    • Management of multiple yeast strains, including quality control and sensory analysis
    • Oversight of mixed culture and clean barrel-aging program
    • Safe, responsible forklift operation and maintenance
    • Oversight of brew staff and/or completion of any necessary tasks to maintain beer production schedule and packaging duties
    • Creating, implementing and employing a rigorous, thorough QA/QC program to ensure quality, consistency, and efficiency within our entire product line
    • Presentation of meticulous, complete records for all brewery processes including brewing, fermentation, transfers, packaging, raw materials, and finished product inventory
    • Collaboration with all team members to achieve company wide goals and initiatives
    • Creation and enforcement of detailed SOPs for all facets of production and brewery operations
    • Source, maintain, and utilize the highest quality raw materials and ingredients, and work with local vendors and suppliers to supplement recipes
    • Identify equipment and physical resources to improve quality, consistency, and efficiency of our beer, and develop a preventative maintenance and emergency plan to care for all equipment and physical resources on site (both in the brewery itself and in our barrel warehouse)
    • Continually improve upon product line and brewery operation procedures, and develop exciting new products that push the industry boundaries and keep our customers engaged and excited about our brand

Other requirements include a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, ability to easily lift and move up to 55lbs, and ability to work safely with potentially hazardous chemicals and in loud, wet, hot, and cold work environments. While we expect a successful candidate to work until completion of tasks, late days or high volume runs will be balanced with flexible hours and scheduled time off when work may be less demanding, depending on our overall schedule.
