Boshkung Brewing Co. is seeking a Head Brewer to help guide production as we head into another busy summer season.
We operate a 10hL brewhouse with 70 HL of fermentation space, packaging in kegs, cans and growlers. We are located in the hamlet of Carnarvon, at the busiest summer intersection in the Algonquin/Haliburton Highlands, which drives a high volume of summer traffic through our retail store. We currently have four core brands with rotating seasonals and opportunity to produce one-off releases. Our attached restaurant is one of the best in the area, and our beers have already won numerous awards, including two Canadian Brewing Awards in 2015, despite the brewery being less than two years old. After recently acquiring a canner, we are now making in-roads into the grocery, TBS, and LCBO markets. Expansion is on the forefront, and we are looking for a hardworking and talented head brewer who is motivated to lead the way.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
We hope to have this position filled and in place by early to mid June. Application deadline is June 1st. This new team member will overlap for several weeks with the outgoing head brewer who unfortunately has to relocate out of town. This is an all-encompassing brewery position. Duties include the following, plus anything else you can imagine doing in a brewery:
• Brewhouse operation, cellaring, yeast management, tank cleaning, and brewhouse maintenance
• Recordkeeping, submission of provincial and federal excise reports
• Raw material management, recipe development and quality control
• Leading and managing the production staff, as well educating and motivating retail team
• Representing brewery and assisting at beer festivals/special events as required
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE HAS:
• A formal brewing education, and/or equivalent industry experience no less than 2 years (required) • Previous experience in a head brewer or team lead capacity (strong asset)
• A demonstrated passion for craft beer
• Ability to function well in a dynamic, multi-tasking environment while maintaining attention to detail
• Willingness to work varying and flexible schedules when required, including evenings and weekends
• An eye for process and efficiency improvement opportunities in the brewery
• Strong mechanical skills, problem-solving skills, and verbal and written communication skills
• Operates in a safe and timely manner, fosters that mentality for the team
• A strong back and a sense of humour
• Secondary skills in plumbing, handiwork, electrical, accounting, or digital design (an asset)
