  • Head Brewer Position - Bozeman MT

Company Name: Julius Lehrkind Brewing Company
Job Posting Title: Head Brewer / Brewmaster
    Job Location: Bozeman, MT
    Job Class: Full Time

Company Overview – At the tender age of just 17, Julius Lehrkind set out from Germany to New York City in 1860, where the promise of new opportunities and adventures awaited his arrival. Having had some brewery experience in Germany, Julius was determined to build a new brewery here in America which would produce some of the finest beers in America.
Upon his arrival, Julius worked a few jobs to earn enough money to purchase his first pieces of brewing equipment and started his first brewery in Davenport, IA, in 1870. While this first brewery was growing successfully, Julius felt that he needed to find a new region to continue his operations where the water would better align with his recipes. So, Julius took a bold chance by packing up his family, equipment and with the aid of a few brewery employees, set our west. Family legend has it that Julius would taste the water at each stop on his journey west to see if the water met his strict standards.
After several stops, Julius arrived in Bozeman, MT where he felt the water was exceptional. Pure Mountain water, clear, fresh and just the right level of minerals. Julius also befriended a large group of Dutch Farmers, who grew barley in Bozeman and befriended the owner of an already existing brewery in Bozeman called Spieth and Krug Brewery, at 240 E. Main, where John Bozeman’s Bistro was located before moving to its current home at 125 W. Main. Julius grew this brewery to an incredible 40,000 barrels of lager beer a year. In fact, business was so good, Julius opened other breweries in Silesia, MT and Red Lodge, MT where the beer brand name was called “Montana Bud”.
In 1919, the State of Montana issued a law that supported Prohibition. This law forced Julius to reevaluate his business operations. At that time the Coca-Cola Company was looking to expand their bottling and distribution operations in Montana, and arranged a deal with Julius that would last through today.
Upon the repeal of Prohibition in 1932, Julius’ son Edwin brought a brew master from Butte, named Ottman, into the partnership, and revived the brewery business for a short time under the label of “Old Faithful.” While this venture was successful, the Coca-Cola bottling and distribution side of the family business required “all hands on deck”, and as such, the Julius Lehrkind Brewing Company was closed.
Today, after 5 generations of proud Lehrkind heritage, the Lehrkind family has chosen to resurrect the Julius Lehrkind Brewing Company once again. The Bozeman water and locally grown barley are just as good today as they were in 1870. With over 100 years of beverage industry production and distribution knowledge and a solid following of customers throughout Montana and Wyoming, what is now needed is a very special head brewer / brew master, who can express the same passion for new and exciting quality beers that Julius exhibited in 1870.
