Experienced Head Brewer needed, South Korea

Magpie Brewing Company is one of the first craft breweries to operate in South Korea. We started small as a contract brewery three years ago and recently opened our production brewery and taproom earlier this year. Our brewing facility and taproom are located on Jeju Island (often referred to as the Hawaii of Korea - a bit of a stretch, but it’s still pretty awesome). Currently, our head office and two of our retail shops are located in Seoul, a city of roughly 10 million people. We are mostly foreigner owned (Canadian / Americans), but we pride ourselves on being an active part of the local community.

We are looking to expand our brewing team with an experienced Head brewer, who can lead our production through the next phase of growth. The right candidate will have a passion for detail, a desire to experiment, a deep understanding of all aspects of the brewing process (scheduling, ingredients, brewing, cellaring, packaging), a positive attitude, and lots of patience (the industry here is growing quickly, but still has a long way to go). We offer lots of flexibility with the understanding of how demanding the job can be.
Specifically, we are expecting a person with lab and yeast management understanding, the ability to create and implement quality control processes, and experience with sours and barrel aging.

    Requirements :
Education and Experience: 5+ years of experience in a production brewery. Formal brewing education is preferred. Comfortable with general yeast lab and QC procedures. 1+ years working with barrel fermentation and aging, as well as bacterial cultures.

Physical: Comfortable lifting and maneuvering malt, kegs, and oak barrels (55+ pounds repeatedly). Proper handling of hazardous materials, and operation of machinery.
Working hours: Flexible schedule, although will require frequent evening and weekend shifts. May require attendance to festival and trade shows, as well as some education related events for staff / customers.

Commitment: We are hoping to find someone who is interested in spending 2-3 years abroad and is comfortable with the stresses of living in a foreign country. Our team will assist with most of headaches though.

Criminal record check, and drug screening are required by Korean Law.

    Opportunity :
Brewing: We currently brew four core beers which our customers know and love, but you’ll essentially have free reign on the creation of seasonal and special recipes. We are anxious to expand our sour offerings, as well as starting up a barrel aging program.

Compensation: Competitive compensation with American standards - with additional consideration for relocation, and performance based bonuses. Health care included. Free beer, unlimited pizza, lots of kimchi.

Environment: We are a young company, with lots of energy and a desire not just to grow our company but the entire craft beer industry here in Korea. We want to provide you with all of the resources you need to become an expert and an ambassador.

If this sounds like the kind of opportunity that you’ve been waiting for, send your resume (preferably in PDF format) to jobs@magpiebrewing.com and we’ll contact you if things look like a good fit.
