    JOB TITLE: Brewing Manager
    LOCATION: Comstock Brewery
    REPORTS TO: Production Manager
    FLSA POSITION TYPE: Full-time, Salaried Exempt

    POSITION SUMMARY: Provides the direction and management that builds and sustains a world-class, safety-driven, quality-focused, high-performing and diverse brewing team.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    •Adheres to and advances the “Safety Always” culture of Bell’s Brewery, Inc., and is accountable for the safety of their department.
    •Successfully builds rapport, respect and camaraderie, both inter- and intra-departmentally, through exceptional coaching, teambuilding and training.
    •Trains and mentors brewing department Managers.
    •Assists the Production Manager in developing and implementing training programs for the Brewery staff.
    •Works closely with the Brewing Personnel Manager to address developing personnel concerns.
    •Leads meetings of direct reports to ensure effective communication throughout the department and company as a whole.
    •Ensures that a quality focus is integral to all aspects of brewing department operations.
    •Oversees department initiatives that ensure brewing areas are organized, clean and sanitary.
    •Works with Brewing Innovation Manager to develop new product recipes, formulation development, and processes.
    •Oversees brewing formulation to compensate for changing raw materials.
    •Oversees accuracy of Microsoft AX brewing information.
    •Supports the Maintenance Manager to ensure all equipment is running safely, at high efficiency and maintained to the highest standards.
    •Works in conjunction with Maintenance Manager and Process Controls Technician to schedule and develop preventative maintenance routines and equipment calibration procedures.
    •Troubleshoots equipment problems within the department.
    •Interfaces with the Engineers to design and install new brewing equipment as needed.
    •Reviews and develops new ProLeiT brewing step sequences.
    •As a MaPS team member, works to assure that an effective planning and communication process for brewery production is promoted throughout the Bells organization.
    •Continuously improves safety, quality and efficiencies while reducing cost and complexity.
    •Establishes key performance indicators and associated feedback processes to assess Brewing departments' performance against standards and objectives.
    •Calculates and authors periodic Brewing Material Efficiency, Quality, and Production reports.
    •Extracts data and produces reports from the ProLeiT software.
    •Ongoing review brewing raw material reports; including but not limited to malt, grain and hops.
    •Works with Quality Department on investigation of Beer Lover Concerns.
    •Maintains Traceability of Raw Materials per HACCP protocols.
    •Oversees the development and upkeep of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    •Is informed about, educates on, and implements industry best practices.
    •Conducts critical assessment of Bell’s beers through active participation in beer sensory panels.
    •May use the company vehicle for deliveries and travel.
    •Assists brewing shifts, as needed.
    •Flexible schedule. 24-hour, 7-day on-call status, required.

    Additional duties may be assigned as necessary

    MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:
    •Two (2) Brewhouses ( 50bbl and 200bbl )
    •Two (2) direct reports (Brewing Personnel Manager and Process Improvement & Support Manager)

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
    •Must possess a valid driver’s license
    •Access to a personal vehicle.

    MATERIALS/MACHINES/EQUIPMENT USED:
    •Microsoft Operating based computer
    •General Office Equipment (i.e.: copy, fax, scanner and postage machines)
    •Computers and other process automation systems
    •Brewing raw materials
    •Cleaning and sanitizing chemicals
    •Pumps, hoses, valves, clamps, gaskets, and other brewery equipment
    •Fork lift/aerial lift truck
    •Compressed air or other gasses, including CO2

    IMPORTANT SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    •Exceptional leadership skills.
    •Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable addressing diverse groups.
    •Strong computer skills necessary to quickly learn Bells’ software systems.
    •An energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards who will positively represent Bell’s Brewery both internally and externally.
    •A well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player.
    •Outstanding attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple processes at one time.
    •Self-motivated with good time management skills.
    •A demonstrated ability to assess priorities effectively.
    •Strong problem solving and analysis skills.
    •Interpersonal skills sufficient to be comfortable leading in a team environment with a great deal of interdepartmental coordination.
    •An understanding of the role of sanitation in the brewing process.
    •The ability and aptitude to work with and troubleshoot brewing equipment.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS:
    •Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or other relevant field.
    •A minimum of five(5) years Management/Leadership experience, preferably at a brewery or other food production facility.
    •Strong working knowledge of brewing equipment including plant electrical controls, process instrumentation and Programmable Logical Controllers.
    •Significant experience in a production brewing environment.
    •Brewing education or accreditation from a recognized institution.
    •Flavor panel experience, formalized training a plus.

    •Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms. Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
    •Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
    •Must be able to participate in critical assessment of beers.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
    •Work is primarily performed in an office environment with frequent trips to operational areas required.
    •The work environment is that of a brewing and packaging facility.
    •The employee frequently must work in a sanitary environment.
    •The noise level in the packaging facilities is frequently loud (90+ dB).
    •The employee regularly works around high voltage, hot water, steam and flame.
    •The employee regularly works with pressurized vessels.
    •The employee comes in contact with and has to handle broken glass.
    •The employee handles hazardous materials.
    •The employee works near moving mechanical parts.
    •The employee works on wet floors and with wet equipment.
    •The employee may occasionally enter a confined space.
