Ex Novo Brewing Company seeks well-qualified, hardworking brewer to join our team as Head Brewer.
Ex Novo is a 2 year-old brewery located in Portland, OR with statewide distribution plus some distribution in SW Washington and California. Planning on brewing ~4,000bbls in 2017. As Head Brewer, you will carry on our commitment to quality and innovation. In a little over two years, Ex Novo has established itself firmly in the competitive brewery landscape of Portland, OR and further distinguishes itself as the first nonprofit brewery in the country – after taking care of our staff and covering costs, we use donate 100% of net profits to benefit local and global nonprofits building a better world.
The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate must be a highly motivated individual. The Head Brewer will manage all aspects of day to day brewery operations to ensure optimal efficiency, quality control, profitability, and production management.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Lead & Manage Brewhouse: 10bbl, 2 vessel direct fire brewhouse, 3x10bbl, 2x20bbl, 3x40bbl Fermenters. We bottle and can with mobile bottling. The brewery also has a taproom/restaurant on-site, open 7 days a week. Loads of cooperation with FOH expected to enhance everyone’s experience.
• Production. Brew, plan, organize, schedule, and direct all aspects of brewing and packaging. Provide support, guidance, and training to brewery staff. Conduct annual brewer reviews. Work with distribution team on order fulfillment and forecasting.
• Develop & Maintain Efficiencies. Identify, create, and execute efficiencies and documentation related to the brewery operations. Manage weekly inventory levels, product availability, production and packaging tracking/reporting. Manage daily production data entry in Ekos Brewmaster. Continuously innovate to improve operational and brewing practices, processes and controls, standardize and create SOP’s. Manage overall brewery organization and cleanliness. Manage brewery safety and OSHA compliance. Oversee and improve upon existing QA/QC program to ensure highest quality and consistency of product.
• Equipment, Supplies & Maintenance. Oversee and execute equipment maintenance. Manage inventory purchasing, point of contact for brewery raw material suppliers including providing research and input on annual contracts with raw materials acquisition.
• You’ll continue brewing our few core brands, while having tons of opportunity for creativity with seasonal beers. We typically brew a new seasonal beer at least once a week, so come with your ideas!
• Brand Ambassador. Participate in Ex Novo events with staff ensuring the brewery is represented with professionalism and passion.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years professional brewing experience, bachelor’s degree in associated field with lab work ideal. Practical knowledge of SOP development and maintenance, safe operating practices and industry accepted quality standards. Experience managing a team of employees, proficiency in word processing, statistical, organizational, and computing. Must have outstanding communication and problem-solving skills, including equipment troubleshooting. The ability to complete accurate and legible paperwork with an attention to detail is key.
