Insulation around kettle

Does anyone know what insulation is typically used around a kettle?

If your going to be reclading with copper or stainless, you can use rockwool type fiberglass insulation. if your leaving it exposed you would want a foam rubber with impermiable surface. rule of thumb the thicker the better, 10cm is plenty 5 cm is ok

Foam or rockwool

For isulation of hot pipes and equipment insulation with a very low chloride content is the best. We are talking about fiberglass or a rigid foam glass.
As Michael Murphy wrote 5-10cm is the standard. You could also look at the R value of your insulation and make a calculation.

For insulation of cold pipes and equipment you better look for something with a low water permeability such as expanded polyethylene or polystyrene materials. Try to cover to prevent humidity from getting in contact with the cold pipe.

Where is a good place to purchase rockwool or foam rubber used in brewing?

rockwool can be found at homedepot, the same stuff you would use in your attic, just wrap and tape the outside of the cylinder and reclad, dont use fiberglass if your not going to reclad it will get destroyed by water.

Foam rubber well you have to look around Im sure you can find it somewhere close to you!
