    Job Overview
    Baxter Brewing Co. in Lewiston, Maine, seeks a Director of Brewing Operations, to have overall responsibility for the safe and efficient production of top-quality beer at Baxter Brewing Co. S/he leads the production team, works closely with the sales, marketing and accounting teams, and is deeply involved in all aspects of the business. The Director of Brewing Operations has a major impact on every facet of Baxter Brewing Co.’s future, and helps set the direction for continued improvement, growth, and success.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • Leading the brewing team to hire, train, mentor, and manage a knowledgeable and dedicated brewing staff
    • Representing the brewery as its technical voice at festivals, dinners, conventions and other events
    • Staying informed and knowledgeable of developing industry trends
    • Developing and ensuring adherence to SOPs that maintain employee safety and beer quality
    • Approval of the Master Production Schedule to ensure beer quality
    • Developing new beers in conjunction with the sales, marketing, and production teams, including recipe development, cost analysis, assistance with branding, and communication of specifications and process to production staff
    • Continued development and oversight of a class leading quality control and quality assurance system by establishing procedures and specifications, assessing their effectiveness through rigorous testing in the lab and through sensory analysis, and maintaining an emphasis on quality at all times
    • Overseeing compliance with regulations (TTB, OSHA, environmental, etc.)
    • Analyzing production records and extensively using Baxter Brewing’s software system to ensure that beer is produced in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible
    • Managing the sourcing of ingredients to maintain consistency of existing beers and to continue Baxter’s record of innovation
    • Attending festivals, conferences, beer dinners, and other events to represent Baxter Brewing
    • Assisting marketing staff with branding, marketing collateral, beer descriptions, etc.
    • When needed, assisting with production tasks in any area of the brewery

    Desired Minimum Qualifications
    • 8+ years’ experience in breweries, minimum 5 years in production breweries of 15,000+ bbl/year
    • 3+ years supervisory experience
    • BA/BS in a relevant field
    • Diploma from an accredited brewing science program
    • Proven record of recipe development
    • Proven record of strong leadership of a large team, especially through times of change and uncertainty
    • Proven ability to work effectively with all areas of a brewery, and to understand their different priorities and needs
    • Experience with growth and expansion a big plus
    • Extensive familiarity with computer skills relevant to a brewery - knowledge of OrchestratedBeer a big plus
    • Extensive knowledge of the safety, environmental, TTB, and other regulatory issues facing breweries
    • Passion for craft beer, and ability to embrace Baxter’s core values

    • Strong computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and ERP
    • Excellent organizational abilities
    • Ability to focus amongst multiple distractions, and to multitask
    • Ability to analyze and solve problems
    • Mechanical aptitude

    Physical Requirements
    • The work for this position is primarily performed in an office environment, but requires frequent trips to the production floor, which involves multiple flights of stairs
    • The production aspects of this job take place in a working brewery environment, which involves the following:
    • Hot, cold, steamy, foggy, wet conditions
    • Noise (up to 90 dB)
    • Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, hot water, cold water, hazardous gases, and pressurized vessels
    • Exposure to machinery with moving parts
    • Wet floors
    • Occasional entry into confined spaces
    • Sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing
    • Seeing, talking, hearing, tasting, and smelling
    • Lifting up to 55 pounds and moving up to 170 pounds
