Hilton Head Brewing Company on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina has a full- time opportunity for an experienced Head Brewer. Our Head Brewer will manage all aspects of brewery operations and possess extensive knowledge of the brewing process, beer styles and recipe development for our 7 BBL brewhouse with 20 BBL fermenters, 15 BBL fermenters, and 7 BBL fermenters.
Essential Functions: Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Direct involvement in all aspects of brewery operations;
• Extensive knowledge of the brewing process and beer styles;
• Responsible for recipe development of current and new beer offerings;
• Effective planning and management to maintain supply of house beers and seasonal brews for tasting room;
• Supervision, training, and performance evaluations of brewery personnel;
• Perform basic maintenance tasks on brewery equipment. Set up hoses, fittings, clamps, etc. required for brewing production and cleaning. Troubleshoot equipment issues.
• Maintaining a clean, neat, and safe work area at all times. Clean, sanitize all equipment, tanks, and brewery areas.
• Checking gravity; monitoring fermentation, carbonating, transferring, kegging and canning;
• Participate in beer dinners, festivals, and special events as needed;
• Train staff in beer knowledge;
• Possess extensive beer knowledge and the ability to do daily beer tastings as needed to evaluate beer quality, flavors, and colors and utilize a keen sense of smell;
• Perform all brewing and cleaning operations per company protocols and standards. Perform quality control checks of beer throughout brewing process;
• Maintain brewery, state and federal compliance, completion of required tax forms, brewery paperwork and documentation.
• Maintain vendor relationships, perform inventory tasks, ordering and pricing of materials and ingredients;
Competencies/Knowledge/Requirements:
* Must be 21 years or older to conduct beer quality taste testing and possess an understanding of the brewing process and beer styles.
* Strong cleaning and sanitation skills.
*Good communication skills; able to read, write and calculate basic algebra computations.
*Flexibility, detail-oriented, reliability and a strong work ethic are critical for this position.
*Team oriented but self-motivated and able to work independently.
*Problem-solving, planning and organizational skills.
*Ability to frequently lift and/or move 60-165 pounds and work in small, confined spaces.
Qualifications
3-5 years professional brewing experience required;
Formal brewery education/ brewing certification preferred.
