  • Measure Carbonation with a Carbodoseur?

    I heard about this the other day on a podcast and was wondering if it was possible to measure carbonation in beer with a Carbodoseur as they do with wine, instead of using a more expensive Zahm & Nagel?

    Has anyone ever given it a try?

    I don't know anything about that system but having looked at the link I doubt it.

    It looks like its designed to have you pour a sample into a glass vessel of some kind and then determine CO2. with carbonation you're going to loose a lot of it getting the beer into that glass vessel.

      Not for fizzy stuff

      I think they're mostly for still wine. It works by measuring how much wine is lost when you shake it up. You start with a specific amount, like 100 ml. Shake it while holding your finger over the tube opening. Then let go, and the wine comes out of the small tube. Do this until no more wine comes out, and you read the level left in the graduated cylinder.

      Since we're working with beer and CO2 dissolved at more than two times the volume of the liquid, after the first shake, the entire cylinder would empty. So these are limited to something like 3500 mg/l. Anything over one volume, it ain't gonna work.
