Magpie Brewing Company is looking to hire a Shift Brewer to join our production team on Jeju Island in South Korea.
Magpie began as one of the first craft breweries in South Korea five years ago. Currently, our head office and two of our retail shops are located in Seoul, while our brewery and another retail location are on Jeju Island. We are owned by a mix of locals and foreigners (Koreans / Canadian / Americans), and pride ourselves on being an active part of the local community.
We are a 15 BBL production brewery with 5 core beers, rotating seasonals and one offs. We are currently focusing on expanding our sour offerings and a regular barrel program. This position will consist of shift work over two shifts, morning and evening with occasional weekend shifts.
Magpie is growing quickly these days, as is the whole of the Korean craft beer market, and we need to bring in some additional talented staff. The right candidate will be detail oriented, have a passion for craft beer, a desire to experiment, a deep understanding of all aspects of the brewing process, will understand and adhere to clean and safe work practices and have a positive attitude.
We have been cultivating a tight-knit team of passionate young beer lovers whom you will be working closely with. Successful applicants should be able to work well in a team as well as independently. Good communication skills and an open mindedness to work with staff who may not speak English fluently is very important.
We are hoping to find someone who is interested in spending a few years abroad and is comfortable with the stresses of living in a foreign country.
Criminal record check and drug screening are required by Korean law.
Responsibilities:
• Perform Equipment CIP and SIP (fermenters, heat exchanger, mash tun, kettle, bright beer tanks and hoses).
• Operate our 15 BBL ABT brewhouse with maximum attention to detail and accuracy to produce highest quality wort (including clear and accurate record keeping).
• Yeast Management (cropping, storing, counts/viability and pitching).
• Cellar Monitoring (gravity and PH checks and dry-hopping).
• Wort and Beer transfers.
• Quality control of fermenting and packaged product.
• Occasional attendance at festivals and trade shows (including brewing education events).
Desired Skills and Experience:
• At least 2 years of experience as a Brewer or shift Brewer, preferably in a production brewery (formal brewing education is preferred but not required)
• Ability to operate a forklift and experience handling hazardous chemicals.
• Able to read and follow written instructions in English.
• Barrel aging experience (barrel cleaning and maintenance, blending and sensory experience, beer and wort transferring and storage).
• Basic Quality Control and lab experience is preferred (including cell counts, titration and plating).
Physical Requirements:
• Able to stand for prolonged periods.
• Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, kneel, climb ladders and stairs.
• Able to manipulate valves and clamps.
• Able to regularly lift and carry 55 pounds.
• Able to periodically and safely lift and move up to 165 pounds.
• Ability to safely work in loud, hot, cold and humid environments.
