    Job Opening – Assistant Brewer

    Olde Salem Brewing Co. is a startup 5 BBL brewery located in downtown Salem, VA, set to open by the end of 2017. We are seeking an Assistant Brewer with a fanatical dedication to cleanliness, a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn and follow instructions, and a passion to create the best beer possible. Previous commercial brewery experience is a plus, but we are willing to train the right individual. This is a part-time, hourly position; flexible work hours are necessary, including nights and weekends, between 20 and 30 hours per week, with the possibility of expansion to 40+ hours as necessitated by demand.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • CIP of fermenters and brite tanks, cleaning kegs, general facility cleaning
    • Sanitary transfer of beer and wort between vessels
    • Yeast harvesting and storage
    • Milling of grain
    • Cleaning and maintenance of beer lines and dispense components
    • Ability to lift 55 pound sacks of grain overhead, move 165 pound kegs, shovel 700+ pounds of wet grain out of mash tun
    • Monitor quality of beer throughout brew process and alert the Head Brewer of any quality concerns
    • Carbonate beer
    • Kegging and other packaging procedures
    • Assist in regular sensory evaluation sessions
    • Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on brewery equipment and processes
    • Be an enthusiastic representative of the Olde Salem Brewing Company brand at all times; assist with marketing at festivals and events


    The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:
    • At least one year prior commercial brewing experience, or formal brewery training.
    • Alternatively, at least 2 years of advanced homebrewing experience, with prior commercial food service, janitorial, or similar work experience
    • Knowledge of proper cleaning and sanitation practices
    • Familiarity with all facets of the wort production process, including milling, mashing, lautering, wort boiling, hopping and cooling
    • Excellent mechanical aptitude and equipment troubleshooting abilities
    • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office (especially Microsoft Excel)
    • Ability to work on one’s own without guidance, and mesh with a small team
    • Ability to describe beer flavors including desirable and defining characteristics of a style of beer, and ability to recognize common off-flavors in beers
    • Basic laboratory experience
    • Desire to continue to learn the craft and improve processes
