  • Head Brewer Needed for Start-Up Brewery in Niagara Falls, Ontario

We are a start-up brewery located in the north end of Niagara Falls on the edge of wine country and burgeoning craft beer town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. We are anticipating opening our doors in summer 2018 and are looking to bring on a head brewer as soon as possible to offer guidance and support during the build out. We have plans for a 15 BBL 2-vessel steam-fired brewhouse and 105 BBL of fermentation capacity upon start-up with room to grow. We have a small team of two owners, one of which will assume the role of operations manager and the other head chef and kitchen manager. We are in search of an experienced and passionate head brewer to lead all aspects of brewery production. The head brewer will work alongside our operations manager to develop an exciting, creative and ever evolving tap list and assist in tackling all day-to-day operations within the brewery. Our objective is sustainable organic growth and doing things the right way. Our number one goal is to produce the best beer possible and that will always be the case. It is essential that our head brewer shares our passion and love for all things beer.

Some of the details of the position are listed below.

    Requirements for position:

    • 2+ years of brewing experience (head or assistant brewer) with another craft brewery, ideally one of a similar size
    • Experience with a barrel program is strongly preferred as we expect this to be a relatively small (initially) but crucial portion of our beer portfolio
    • Experience with start-ups and/or brewery expansions would be an asset
    • We will use mobile canning for the bulk of our packaging initially but experience with packaging would still be considered an asset
    • Someone who is mechanically inclined is certainly preferred in order to maintain equipment and troubleshoot malfunctions

    Responsibilities include:

    • While we have a firm grasp on the brewing process as avid home brewers we expect the ideal candidate to have much more knowledge on all of the responsibilities that go into running a production brewery – as such, we will spare you the standard list of grain handling, wort production, yeast collection, etc, etc. Essentially, we expect the ideal candidate to be able to go from grain to glass while maintaining inventory as well as a clean and safe workplace.
    • We would like our head brewer on in some capacity during the build out in order to contribute to the production area design – ideally this would be part time in a consultant role before coming on full time later in the process when it’s time to make beer
    • We expect our head brewer to be a team player which will include items such as product training for front of the house staff, collaborating with other breweries and in general, contributing towards the direction and vision of the brewery

    Compensation:

    • We will offer an above average salary for the right candidate but this will be reflective of competence and experience
    • A basic benefits package will be provided
    • Opportunities for equity in the company based on years of service will be available

In closing, we love beer, we love this industry, and we are looking for a head brewer who is as excited about going on this journey as we are. Our head brewer will never be encouraged to cut corners or turn around beers cheaper or faster. We will do everything we can to put our brewer in a position to be successful as well as give them the tools and freedom to express themselves creatively. We are here to brew great beer. If this is a role that sounds appealing to you, please email us at GregGnys@hotmail.com. We’d love to chat =)

    Cheers!
