    Wachusett Brewing Company is looking for a seasoned brewer with hands-on operational experience, ready to lead all aspects of a 100,000 barrel per year aggressively growing commercial brewery. The ideal candidate will be passionate about, committed to and relentless on product-quality; while also recognizing they are also still learning an amazingly complicated process.

    Primary Function:

    The Director of Brewing Operations is responsible for oversight and management of the brewhouse operations from concepts on recipe formulation on 1-barrel pilot brewery, to brewing efficiencies on a 50-barrel fully automated brewhouse; clarification efficiencies with a 2017 Andritz centrifuge; filtering, carbonation, and all cellaring efficiencies, and working closely with our QA department on overall finished liquid quality. Responsibilities also include the same for current and beers and FAB’s. The DoBO will need to work with the founder and engineering team on implementation of 100-barrel brewhouse, ancillary tankage and infrastructure.

    Responsibilities:

    • Oversight of the entire brewing process from milling to readying liquids for filling
    • Oversight of ensuring all safety protocols are observed in brewing and cellaring
    • Management of the brewhouse and cellar team
    • Oversight of tracking and recording key measurements during the process
    • Oversight and improvements to yeast management (harvesting, pitching, storage)
    • Raw materials procurement, management and vendor relationships
    • Oversight of brewhouse with maximum attention to brewer detail and accuracy
    • Oversight of cellar with maximum attention to cellar persons detail and accuracy
    • Offer insight on CIP and sanitization improvements and energy and water conservation
    • Review and revision of all brewhouse and cellar SOP’s
    • Offer insight on troubleshooting, technical maintenance and adherence to SOP’s
    • Oversight of move of data collection to new Orchestrated Beer management software
    • Work and communicate well across all levels of a brewery operation (management, packaging, customer, suppliers, etc.)
    • Take responsibility for finished liquid QA/QC with work closely with QA department
    • Manage collection of data relative to beer and cellaring QA to furnish to QA department
    • Offer suggestions on process improvements to cellaring techniques
    • Manage and take ownership of responsibility of opening and closing facility
    • Comply with all safe chemical handling procedures including personal protection equipment such as gloves and goggles
    • Oversight of brewhouse and cellar sanitation and organization

    Other Requirements:

    • Must be able to bend, squat, kneel, push, pull and walk on uneven surfaces on an occasional basis
    • Must be able to climb stairs both inside and outside
    • Occasionally lift up to 60 lbs
    • Ability to work in a brewery environment which may be loud, slick, humid, hot and cold

    Education, Experience and Skills:

    • Prior experience on a minimum 50-barrel brewhouse in a full production brewery
    • Prior management experience required
    • Ability to learn and understand the integration of Orchestrated Beer software and its importance of precision in all brewery and cellar operations
    • Experience creating and brewing multiple styles of beer
    • Prior knowledge of barrel-aging and brewing sours is a plus
    • In depth knowledge of yeast strains, hop varieties, grain varieties, grain roasts, etc.
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced and constantly changing work environment
    • Writing and math skills are necessary to accurately complete a dilution calculation, volume, flow, density, weight, length, pressure and other unit conversions, calculate beer volumes/losses and alcohol content
    • Strong work ethic and self-starter
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and team collaboration
