    Salary: $20.00 to $24.00/hour + monthly production volume bonus

    The Merchant Ale House is a busy brewpub that has been in operation for 20 years. We’ve recently expanded our brewing operation into retail sales and are looking for a team member to help us continue to serve the brews we’re known for as well as to innovate and grow.

    Details of the job below:

    The Brewer will provide support to the Brewing department. They will receive training on all aspects of Brewing operation, including cellar operations, equipment upkeep & safe use, production, packaging, and basic lab work, and will be expected to carry out these duties on an ongoing basis.

    The Brewer will be expected to be proficient in equipment operation and quality control strategies. They will receive, process, and prepare brewing ingredients in a way that ensures brewing efficiency, accuracy, consistency, and quality. Maintaining a clean and organized production space is also a critical component of the Brewer’s duties.

    The Brewer will be expected to participate in recipe development and provide creative support to the Head Brewer. A passion for the science of brewing, and maintenance of current knowledge of brewing techniques, styles, and industry best practices will be essential to the Brewer’s success, and to the success of the Brewery.

    Hours will vary depending on the needs of the Brewery, as defined by the Head Brewer. This will include early morning starts (4am), and weekends and holidays if needed. The Brewer can expect to work 36-44 hours per week.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Complete brewing process safely, efficiently, and accurately – mashing, lautering, boiling, cooling, transferring, packaging.
    Adhere to standard operating procedures unless otherwise directed by the Head Brewer
    Assist in recipe development and record keeping
    Monitor, pitch, and evaluate yeast
    Take measurements to ensure quality standards are met
    Monitor supply of raw materials and related inventory – Malt, hops, yeast, additives, chemicals, safety equipment – and communicate needs to Head Brewer
    Maintain brewhouse cleanliness, including all tanks, kegs, and brewery related work areas
    Communicate closely with the Head Brewer and Management team
    Ensure proper keg line operation and cleanliness
    Maintain unused grain storage and spent grain disposal
    Monitor gravities, temperatures, and carbonation levels
    Ensure security procedures are adhered to
    Occasional off-site work at beer related events
    Stock and organize keg fridge
    Required Education, Skills and Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Post Secondary diploma/degree/certificate in a brewing or fermentation related program is an asset.

    Experience: A minimum of two years in commercial brewing or four years in a related field (winemaking, distilling, etc)

    The Brewer must exhibit a high level of attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and have a familiarity with Microsoft Word & Excel. A passion for guest satisfaction, quality assurance, and product innovation will be essential to the Brewer’s success.

    Physical Demands

    The Brewer will be required to stand; walk; climb stairs; use handheld tools and operate controls. The employee must frequently lift and move weight of up to 25kg and be able to move kegs that weigh 60kg to a height of 122cm. Reasonable accommodations may be made for those with disabilities to perform these duties.

    The working environment will expose the Brewer to hot water, steam, pressurized vessels, highly alkaline and acidic chemicals, and loud noises. They will regularly encounter production staff from other departments, and will work in close proximity to moving mechanical parts. The Brewer will frequently encounter wet floors and seasonal temperature changes.
