  • Plate and frame heat exchangers

I have been searching for a plate and frame heat exchanger for new 10 barrel system. I have contacted a few places but it's not so easy to compare. I have estimates from
    • Alfa Lavel
    • SPx Flow
    • Thermaline

Any ideas on what I actually need or what most are using?
I will have approximately 600 gal CLT so I think I will only need a single stage unit.
    CLT temp ~38°F
45-60 minute transfer to fermenter, I assume that is the industry average?
option to get down to 50°F for lagers but will mostly do ales.

    Thanks for the tips

You should want to transfer as fast as you can, we average 30 minutes depending on how much trub there is and how cold the water is.

You're consulting with the HX suppliers for sizing, right?

We recently purchased a new HX to replace the old one, bought on a "It looks big enough" basis. The new HX was configured by the manufacturer--Thermaline--to fit our specs. We're now seeing 20 bbl knock-outs at around 20 minutes with a wort exit temp of 76F and cooling water entering around 40-50F and exiting around 160F. We recover the cooling water in our HLT, which saves a lot of energy.

One of the best brewhouse improvements we've made in years.

Thermaline is the way to go. While we do not have one, they are a first rate operation.
Be aware you can have those units set up in many different ways. We have one that uses both CLT and Glycol on different ports.
In my view the less complex the better. When this type of unit does fail they can be a real trick to service. You need working space around them.

PM me with contact info. We have two old Alfa-Laval HXs in good condition that need new homes.

              Correction: HXs are Mueller Accu-Therms.
