  • Moldy caps help!

Can anyone advise me on a proper sterile capping technique? Basically, I spray bottle a mild solution of 5% bleach in water over and under my caps, “I use a hand bench capper”. Now mold AND rust are appearing. What can anyone recommend to correct my foolhardiness?

    bleach?

First off the bleach is making your caps rust...its an oxidizer. Use a better sanitizer Iodophore is a nice no rinse sanitizer and doesn't change the flavor of your beer at normal use concentration. Or try boiling them.

The mold could be getting in anywhere depending on your brewing habits. Mold spores are airborn and quite hardy. Make sure everything that touches you wort/beer is 1st cleaned, and second sanitized. Use closed fermentation.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,
    Joe

      Before or after

Is mold growing on your caps prior to capping or is the issue araising after bottling?
Also, what material is the liner inside your caps, PVC, PVC-free,...?
