Position: Brewer
Reports to: Founder/Head Brewer
POSTED 20 JULY 2012: Trillium Brewing Company is a new Boston brewery in late stage start up, seeking a full-time Brewer to begin late summer/early fall 2012.
Key Results Areas
Quality Finished Beer Production
Quality finished beer production is the ultimate goal of the Brewer. Beer produced by Trillium is consistent, free from significant flaws, true to the Head Brewer’s intention and of the highest quality.
The Brewer will follow recipes designed by the Head Brewer and will make independent process decisions if necessary. The Brewer will alert the Head Brewer of any process, ingredient or equipment anomalies as they arise.
Creativity is encouraged; newly conceived recipes as well as modifications to existing brands will be brewed on the pilot system as a creative outlet as well as to ensure an interesting pipeline of potential new beers.
Document and record data from all brewing, fermentation, and packaging as well as all related cleaning, sanitizing, and equipment maintenance . Provide suggestions for process improvement. Modify existing/write new brewery SOPs and implement/train staff on resulting process improvements as appropriate.
Lead regular sensory/tasting panels and document results.
Maintain an adequate supply of ingredients and other brewery supplies to ensure adherence to production schedule.
Ensure sufficient quantity of healthy, viable pitches of yeast and other fermentation microbes are available well in advance of near term need.
Qualify relevant suppliers and vendors. Document and communicate supplier issues and performance with the owners.
Representative
The Brewer will represent Trillium Brewing Company on site and at events, to other staff, the public/consumers, and business partners.
Consistently and accurately personify the culture and philosophies of Trillium.
Engage with consumers in Trillium’s tasting room with knowledge and passion about the brewery and our beers.
Manage off-site events independently or with staff/volunteers ensuring we represent the brewery well at each occasion.
Qualifications
Experience
Applicants for the Brewer position will have had a minimum of one year experience as a Brewer or Assistant Brewer at a smaller scale commercial production brewery or packaging brewpub.
Autonomy and Initiative
As a new brewery, Trillium Brewing Company and its owners will rely heavily on all staff to work with high levels of autonomy and take initiative to seek out tasks to be completed or areas for improvement. The Brewer has the ability and responsibility to make decisions independently as appropriate.
Timely documentation is critical, including process deviations, and the resulting decisions, actions and expectations of outcomes.
Excellent, timely and reciprocal communication between owners and Brewer is expected.
High comfort level working independently, or managing a small staff, to complete tasks without on-site support from the Head Brewer or owners.
Flexibility
As Trillium Brewing Company begins operation, all staff will be expected to fill multiple roles, and pitch in as necessary to ensure smooth operation and the success of the brand.
Willingness to do tasks outside the scope of Brewer position (i.e. retail sales, participate in marketing activities, deliveries, etc)
Contribute ideas to ensure company’s long term success
Able to work unscheduled, varied and/or long hours
Accessible for remote communication in off hours
Accessible on short notice for emergency support
Knowledge and Skills
Sufficient computer literacy, writing and math skills necessary to accurately document brewing session worksheets, inventory management.
Physical Requirements
Ability to frequently lifting 75 pounds to shoulder height,
Being on his or her feet for up to 12 hours per day
Ability to frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Ability to be frequently exposed to wet conditions and work in extreme cold.
Ability to work near moving mechanical parts.
