Assistant Brewer - Berkeley Brewing Science - Oakland, CA

Berkeley Brewing Science is hiring! We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented brewing professional, excited about the intersection of beer and cutting edge science, to join our team.

    Who we are:
We’re Berkeley Brewing Science, a yeast lab using innovative genetic techniques to create novel brewing yeast. We engineer yeast strains to produce flavor and aroma compounds during fermentation (citrus, floral, tropical, herbaceous, dank, spicy, etc.) and to increase performance attributes (decreased off-flavors like diacetyl, faster fermentation, control over flocculation and attenuation, etc.), providing brewers with new tools for making better beer. We've worked alongside taste-makers and industry-leaders to save brewers time and money and to reduce beer’s impact on the environment.

    About our brewery:
The brewery and cellar at BBS do not comprise a customer-facing brewery. Rather, they function to support scientific development and commercialization of our yeast strains, as well as to propagate commercial yeast pitches. We operate two separate brewhouses: a smaller pilot brewhouse and a larger brewhouse for the yeast cellar.

The 1BBL R&D brewhouse feeds multiple alleys of 20-liter fermenters, which are used to test several strains simultaneously with the same base wort. This beer serves in-house sensory and industry samples. It is the means by which we communicate our strains’ capabilities, and quality is paramount. Our recently added 4BBL brewhouse is used to produce wort for our propagation cellar and R&D fermentations when larger batches are needed.

    About the position:
The Assistant Brewer is a support role with the primary task of maintaining the R&D brewery. The Assistant brewer will also work in the propagation cellar, monitor both cellars in detail and communicate pertinent information with the brewery and lab teams, and perform some laboratory tasks. Commitment to teamwork, process, sanitation, and sterile/aseptic technique is imperative.

Duties include but are not limited to:
    • Raw materials handling
    • Equipment CIP: we have many fermenters andcleaning is the biggest part of the job
    • Sanitation of equipment
    • Wort production
    • Monitoring fermentation: gravities, pH, sensory, anomalies
    • Keeping detailed parameter and sensory records
    • Racking
    • Preventative maintenance on facility and equipment
    • Yeast handling
    • Cell/Viability Counts
    • Packaging and shipping of yeast

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This is a physically demanding job. An ideal candidate possesses:
    • Team-centric attitude
    • Ability to work unsupervised while maintaining established safety and quality standards
    • Ability to follow SOPs
    • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative positive attitude
    • Exemplary productivity and self-directedness
    • Strong focus on safety and efficiency
    • Commitment to understanding and supporting beer and yeast quality
    • Capacity to manage multiple processes simultaneously
    • Strong mechanical aptitude
    • Familiarity with pumps and cooling systems
    • Ability to think outside the box and respond to daily challenges
    • Ability to execute aseptic practices
    • Obsession with sanitation...
    • and of course enthusiasm and passion for beer and science!

    Requirements:
    • Minimum 1 year professional brewing, cellaring and/or packaging in a commercial brewery
    • At least 21 years of age
    • Computer proficiency: email, documents, spreadsheets, search engines
    • Excellent record keeping
    • Ability to lift up to 55 lbs repeatedly
    • 40-50 hours per week (days are not always 9-5)

Compensation commensurate with experience. Email resume to nick@bbsbeer.com.
Berkeley Brewing Science offers professional brewers next generation yeast. Better yeast, better beer.
