    The brewer is in charge of all wort movement from grain to brite tank. This is a full-time, non-entry level position. As a brewer, you are an integral member of the production team. A track record of excellence, and a full commitment to brewing education are paramount for this position. The brewer must be able to troubleshoot and make adjustments accordingly based on data, knowledge, and communication with the team. We are looking for someone who is interested in finding creativity through the process and understands the value in the small gains as we constantly track and reevaluate each step along the way. This position requires critical and innovative thinking skills, attention to detail, and finding value in maintaining poise under pressure. This position works as a shift lead to help ensure all production duties for the day are completed and reports directly to the Production Manager.

    Essential Duties (Including but not limited to):
    • Producing wort
    • Milling grain
    • Harvesting yeast
    • Taking gravities
    • Cell counts
    • Dry hopping
    • Graining out
    • Maintain data reports, inventory counts, and organizational integrity
    • Racking beer
    • Carbonating beer
    • CIP of fermenter
    • Supporting production team on the floor

    • Drive the forklift safely with pallets of kegs, grains, and barrels
    • Current, valid driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma, and experience in a high-volume brewery, wort production experience, brewing education preferred but not necessary.

    NECESSARY LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:.) Other certifications issued via organizations such as UCSD Extension, SDSU Business of Craft Beer Program and Beer Judge Certification Program are a plus.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write and interpret documents such as identification, receipts and instructional materials is required, as is the ability to effectively communicate with employees of the organization.

    REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions, and deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations is required. Problem-solving within the parameters of one’s scope of responsibilities for this position is required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly be required to stand for long periods of time, walk, use their hands to handle materials, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee will frequently be required to talk or hear, and will be required to taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or push or pull up 50L kegs (weighing 140 pounds each), though adequate tools and assistance will be provided, when possible, to ease this process. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust optical focus.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be exposed to Hazardous chemicals, and water temperatures of 200+ degrees. Employee will be required to go into the cold box—which is kept at 40 degrees Fahrenheit—for periods of up to 30 minutes at a time. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work ranges from moderate to very loud.
