  • Looking for ambitious Assistant Brewer/Cellar Master

    Benchtop Brewing is turning 4 in December and we are looking to add to our team now. We are located in Norfolk, VA. We have taken home gold medals at GABF, Virginia Craft Brewers Guild, and the US Open. We focus on farm to glass styles that utilize local ingredients/businesses, kettle souring, juicy hop bombs, decadent porters/stouts, and crispy lagers. Innovation is a huge focus for us. We have a 7 bbl brewhouse with a current annual capacity of 2500 bbl and we are continuing to pursue thoughtful growth. We have a small barrel program, a 15 bbl Brett Foeder, a 15 bbl Oud Bruin Foeder, and 2 13 bbl Lagering Foeders. We have recently added 6 new tanks that include bright tanks and our custom lagering foeders.

    Job Prerequisites:

    *1-3 years of experience in a production brewery of comparable size or larger.
    *Valid drivers license.
    *Brewing education is nice, but not required. We can teach you.
    *A basic understanding of scientific principles and the ability to apply that knowledge to practical applications.
    *Barrel program experience preferred, but not required.
    *Canning line/Bottling experience a big plus.
    *Experience running cellar CIP's, transferring beers, and kegging beer a must.
    *A general thirst for knowledge and desire to innovate.

    General Responsibilities
    Technical and practical knowledge of brewing, fermentation, and the finishing stage of beer production.

    Flexibility to work varied hours and long days when production levels increase as necessary.

    Excellent mechanical aptitude, problem solving skills, and understanding of mechanical systems.

    The ability to lift 55 lbs above your head and the ability to work long periods on your feet, work at heights, crouch down, twist, turn, and work in extreme temperatures.

    Responsibilities include:

    - Execute any and all brewery operations tasks laid out by Head Brewer and/or Lead Brewer
    - Cleaning of kegs, brewery equipment, brewery facility.
    - Assist in monthly grain and keg inventories for P&L statements
    - Taking of daily cellar/fermentation log readings
    - Positively and professionally represent the brewery at beer festivals, including set up and break down of equipment.
    - Packaging beer to include kegging, canning, bottling etc..
    - Proper maintenance of laboratory equipment.
    - Assisting in preparing ingredients for brewing.
    - Assisting in yeast handling and maintenance as needed.
    - Adherence to established SOP's and proper record keeping.

    Pay will be commensurate with experience and structure of actual position can be adjusted based on candidate's experience.

    Assistant Brewer/Cellar Master reports to the Head Brewer.
