    Back Forty Beverage is searching for a motivated individual to join our brewing team. The ideal candidate wants to work hard, learn and help grow a dynamic exciting new company located in Portland, OR. Brewer 2 at Back Forty will be getting in to the company on the ground floor and will play an integral part in creating a world class brewing facility. They will partake in all aspects of brewing from wort production to packaging to lab work and everything in between. There is huge potential for growth for Brewer 2 with Back Forty.

    Back Forty is dedicated to serving the alcohol beverage industry in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. We’re licensed as a brewery and distillery, which gives us tremendous flexibility to create. We are hosting both contract and alternating proprietorship breweries and distilleries.

    We are a well-funded small brewery and distillery situated just outside of Portland, OR in Clackamas. Clackamas offers easy access to some of the bounties of Oregon: Portland uniqueness, craft breweries, distilleries and world class restaurants, Willamette Valley wine region, hiking, biking, skiing, kayaking on Mount Hood and only a couple short hours from the dramatic Oregon coast and the Pacific Ocean.

    The Brewery

    Back Forty Beverage has a newly built three vessel brewhouse (mash cooker, lauter tun, kettle/whirlpool) created by Marks Design and Metalworks in Vancouver, WA. We have 260 bbl. of fermentation capacity split between six 40 bbl and one 20 bbl CCV with matching BBTs. We have a dedicated lab and sensory room allowing for robust QA and QC programs. We are primed to grow.

    Responsibilities and Duties include but not limited to:
    • Pre-Production – Raw material organization, inventory
    • Brewing – Brewing to recipe, attention to detail and record keeping, following SOPs.
    • Yeast – yeast management, cell counts & viability, harvesting and pitching
    • Cellar – racking, filtering, carbonating, vessel CIP & purging, quality assurance and control
    • Laboratory – Forced aging, VDK testing, DO testing, ATP, limit attenuation, wort stability
    • Sensory – Creating and participating in sensory analysis
    • Packaging – keg cleaning and filling, canning assistance (mobile), specialty bottle filling
    • Cleaning – maintain a clean and sanitary brewing environment
    • Safety – work safely, help establish and maintain a safe work environment following acceptable industry standards
    • Record keeping – brewhouse, cellar, packaging, shipping, cleaning, maintenance, etc.
    • Inventory – maintain inventory records daily, audit inventory monthly
    • Distillery Assistance – assist with distillery operations as required

    Knowledge and Skills
    • Grounded knowledge of brewery technology and process, science and engineering
    • Experience/ knowledge of, and a passion for fermented beverages.
    • Ability to communicate well verbally, through email, and texts.
    • Ability to multi-task and work to a deadline
    • Ability to identify and solve problems
    • Mechanical aptitude, can use tools and preform reasonable maintenance of brewery related equipment
    • Must be self-motivated and a self-starter.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule, weekends, nights and early mornings included.
    • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position including but not limited to standing for extended periods, lifting 55 lbs without assistance, work in a physically small environment, climbing stairs, assisting in lifting/moving items in excess of 55lbs

    This is a full time, hourly position. In return for the previous list of qualifications and requirements, Back Forty Beverage is prepared to offer a fair compensation and benefits depending on experience and qualifications.
