    Summary Description:
    The primary role of the Brewmaster is to direct the second pillar of the company mission: to enhance beer quality for the consumer. The Brewmaster manages all aspects of production to the highest quality standards and works with other departments to identify and support areas of quality improvement outside of the brewery. The Brewmaster manages the production staff and holds them accountable to professional and quality standards, helps develop the creative process across the entire department, and manages the resources of the company to make the best beer. With the support of the management team, the Brewmaster develops and implement budgets, raw material contracts, vendor relationships, hiring plans, job training, employee relations and all other necessary management functions to ensure HenHouse remains a top quality brewery.


    PRIMARY SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES: This is not an exhaustive list of everything that needs to be done. Within the HenHouse team, our members always find ways to look after the business, their co-workers, and the beer!
    • Department growth strategy
      • Identify the key goals and necessary resources for the department’s growth over the short, medium, and long term
      • Identify where those goals and resources require coordination and input from other departments
      • Present steps towards achieving goals and implementing new resources in a way that promotes the standards identified in the Quality Manual
      • Forecast and execute annual contracts for packaging materials, bulk malt and hops
    • Department budget management
      • Establish and review department spending budgets for labor, materials, equipment, and other department related purchases
        • Annual budget creation
        • Quarterly budget review
    • Hiring for department
      • With the HR Director, identify necessary positions to implement department strategy
      • With the HR Director, recruit, interview and offer positions to only the best candidates
    • HR/Safety Compliance
      • With the HR Director, review necessary safety and workplace conduct regulations, train staff on applicable regulations, and enforce departmental compliance
    • ABC/TTB compliance
      • File Brewer’s report of Operations to the TTB on a quarterly basis
      • With the HR Director, review necessary ABC and TTB regulations, train staff on applicable regulations, and enforce departmental compliance
    • Setting employee performance expectations
      • Demonstrate the highest level of integrity in how you interact with your coworkers, your direct reports, and the quality of our beer
      • Develop written performance plans for all members of the department documenting past performance and targeted future development
      • With each direct report, review and agree to the performance plan in an annual review, and measure and record progress towards goals in quarterly reviews
    • Enforcing employee performance expectations
      • Identify and commend exemplary behavior in all members of the department, encouraging them to do the same
      • Where necessary, identify inappropriate behavior in department member and present corrective action
      • Where necessary, present verbal warnings, written warnings, and termination of department members as a proportional response to inappropriate employee behavior
    • Scheduling department hours
      • Set and communicate the hours of business in which each member of the department is expected to be working, whether in a specific location or remotely
    • Onboarding and Training of Production Staff
      • Develop written standards of training outlining what an employee must have completed to be considered trained for their position
      • Develop written plans for regular training on production operations
      • Provide mentoring and leadership for all production hires
      • Auditing performance to ensure training is effective
    • Team Building Organization
      • Coordinate quarterly team events or field trips
    • Inventory management
      • Oversee ordering department supplies and raw materials
    • Production Operations
      • Oversee all production operations
      • Oversee and guide all new recipe development
      • Ability to reliably perform all Brewer, Cellar Technician, and Lab Technician duties and responsibilities
      • Maintain a clean and orderly facility
      • Oversee maintenance of department equipment
      • Track errors impacting the Production Team and report to the Director of Operations
    • Quality Control
      • Develop and implement SOPs for new and existing processes
      • Audit SOPs and update as necessary
    • Maintain and promote a positive work environment with a focus on customer service-based problem solving

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    This job has supervisory, training, development and managing responsibilities over other department staff.

    Education and/or Experience
    • Bachelor's degree and/or certification specific to Brewing or equivalent, required.
    • At least three years of related experience required.
    • Bilingual, verbal and written, (Spanish), preferred


    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND/OR REGISTRATIONS

    Valid California Driver’s License
