    About us: Protagonist Beer is an award winning(2021 GABF Gold and Silver medal) brewery with two locations in Charlotte, NC. Founded in 2019, we are a young brewery that is looking to expand our production team to keep up with the growing demand for our beer.

    Job Title: Brewer/Cellar Person(reports to Head Brewer)

    Schedule: Full-Time

    Location: Charlotte, North Carolina

    Position Summary: This position is based primarily at our Southend production facility but includes some time spent at our R&D facility in NoDa. This position is focused on wort production and cellaring but will also include R&D brews and/or other tasks. The ideal candidate will be able to master our production brewhouse and cellar, producing wort and beer to spec. As with all of our employees, we seek a candidate who can fulfill the below job responsibilities in the short term and who looks to take on more responsibilities with the company over time.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Operation of a 2 bbl(2 vessel) and 15 bbl(3 vessel) brewhouse
    • Brewhouse cleaning, CIP, and routine maintenance
    • Cellar work, including fermenter/brite tank CIP, beer transfer, packaging, and other beer handling
    • Safe handling of brewery chemicals for CIP
    • Yeast handling and harvesting
    • Upholding and maintaining rigorous sanitation standards in the brewhouse and cellar
    • Routine maintenance and utility work on equipment and facilities
    • Addition of raw materials and process aids in the product at various production stages; grain to glass production of beer
    • Maintain a clean, neat, and safe work area
    • Support brewery staff as directed by Head Brewer
    • Assisting with other brewery operations as needed including shipping and receiving, draft system maintenance, QA/QC, R&D, etc.

    Additional Responsibilities:
    • Have a thorough understanding of the brewing process, our everyday beers, and our seasonal and experimental styles of beer.
    • Inventory management via Ekos
    • New recipe creation and innovation of existing recipes/styles/processes

    Materials/Machines/ Equipment Used:
    • Forklift
    • Scissor Lift
    • Semi-automated keg washer
    • General brewery equipment and chemicals

    Qualifications/Important Skills and Abilities:
    • Previous experience or education in the brewing industry is required
    • Experience with basic cellar and packaging operations, including tanks CIPs and transfers
    • Mechanical aptitude; skilled with basic brewery equipment troubleshooting and repair
    • Familiarity with a wide range of raw materials and beer styles
    • Ability to work well under pressure
    • Ability to take direction and accept constructive criticism
    • A passion for craft beer, with a dedication to our core values and beliefs
    • Maintain flexible hours and ability to work weekends and holidays(*most work will be M-F 8am-5pm)
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Current forklift certification and/or safety training preferred
    • Self starter and motivated to continually learn and grow as a member of the craft beer industry

    Compensation Type: Salaried, Exempt, Pay based on experience

    Physical Demands and Work Environment:
    • Performance duties of this job include regularly being required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk, hear, and smell
    • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and lift and/or move up to 185 lbs
    • Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb.
    • Must be able to critically assess beer quality in moderation and safely as directed by the Head Brewer
    • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus
    • The brewery is a manufacturing environment where exposure to moisture, heat, refrigerated areas, noise, and moving machinery are frequent throughout the day
