    Head Brewer - Pale Fire Brewing Co.


    Pale Fire Brewing Co. is a production brewery with a vibrant Taproom/Restaurant in the heart of downtown Harrisonburg, VA near James Madison University. We have distribution across the Commonwealth of Virginia. We exist to create positive, memorable experiences for both our customers and our community because we are more than beer. We have been open for eight years and are a growing company with a focus on teamwork and ownership.


    Job Description: This is a leadership position. The Head Brewer will be responsible for managing all day to day cellar and brewing operations for Pale Fire Brewing Co. The Head Brewer responsibilities are listed below. This position is required to follow all SOPs for Pale Fire Brewing Co. in a safe and productive manner. The Head Brewer may be required to attend outside events, tap takeovers, festivals or competitions and must represent PFBC in a positive manner. This position reports directly to the President/Managing Partner.

    Responsibilities:
    • Lead and train production staff in all duties outlined in Brewer job description.
    • Develop and maintain SOPs, QA/QC guidelines.
    • Ensure training of production staff and their adherence to all SOPs for Pale Fire Brewing Co.
    • Training production staff on proper use of all brewery equipment.
    • Lead production and staff scheduling.
    • Attend regularly scheduled leadership and production meetings.
    • Development of new product recipes.
    • Ensure production staff is performing and documenting daily readings and analysis of all products in process.
    • Promote and maintain a safe, productive work environment.
    • Ensure daily wash-down and cleaning of the production area.
    • Maintain accurate inventory and transfer records.
    • Represent Pale Fire Brewing Co. in a positive and professional manner on premise and at festivals, competitions or other events.
    • All other reasonable tasks assigned by the President/Managing Partner.
    Requirements:

    Applicant must possess:
    - Minimum of 3 years experience in a production brewery setting
    - Education from an accredited brewing school(s) and/or other beer-related education (ie, Siebel, Davis, BJCP, Ciccerone)
    - Great passion and enthusiasm for craft beer, brewing, creating recipes, and researching and applying new techniques
    - Strong leadership, organization, and time-management skills
    - Strong verbal and written communication skills
    - Strong sense of responsibility both inside and outside the brewery
    - Ability to work and communicate well with others in both the production and administrative sides of the brewery
    - Extensive knowledge and experience with most if not all beer styles
    - Strong vision and desire to produce award-winning beer
    - Ability to design traditional and non-traditional beer recipes that will excite our ever-growing fanbase
    - Strong mechanical background- ability to troubleshoot/repair mechanical issues in brewery setting
    - Ability and willingness to adopt new processes/practices and/or beer-styles
    - Ability to source and maintain raw materials inventories and contracts
    - Ability to source and maintain packaging inventories and cooperage
    - A maniacal focus on cleanliness, safety and organization of equipment, lab, and facility
    - Ability to utilize and manage brewery production software (Ekos)
    - Experience working in a brewery lab (yeast propagation, etc.)
    - Experience working with at a minimum of 15bbl brewhouse or larger
    - Willingness to work in a fast pace environment, yet be precise in daily tasks


    Other Criteria:
    - Ability to stand for long periods of time
    - Ability to lift 55 pounds
    - Ability to be frequently exposed to wet, hot, and cold conditions
    - Ability to work well under pressure
    - Maintain flexible hours (early, late and occasional weekend shifts)
    - Ability to attend and work outside events and tasting room operations
    - Ability to speak in front of groups or tours
    - Ability to work independently and in a team with minimal direct supervision
    - Forklift certification is a plus
    - Self Starter and motivated to learn and work in a team environment
