We are currently hiring for our next Brewing Manager in Boston, MA.
The Brewing Manager at our R&D Brewery in Boston is responsible for maintaining a brewing culture of creativity, innovation and continuous improvement through pursuit & implementation of innovative beers. The Brewing Manager will be responsible for both the 10bbl brewery and the Nano brewery by managing recipe development, ensuring raw material availability, supporting various research projects, managing 5S, safety, GMP initiatives, capital projects and continuously developing brewing team. Supports the scale-up process during recipe development and recommends equipment and improvements in manufacturing methods to support efficient large scale production. This role works closely with the Tour Center, Tap Room and New Product Development teams to ensure priority alignment and on-time delivery of in spec beer as requested. This role works regularly with BBC Brewer/Founder and VP of Brewing - no denim shirts required!
What You'll Do:
New Beer Development
• Collaborate with NPD and R&D teams on recipe innovation - including leading creativity from within the brewing team
• Manage process and formulation of BBC products to ensure adherence to specifications and performance targets
• Collaborate with Brewery Programs Manager on interesting and innovative beers for the Tour Center, Tap Room and beer festivals
• Develop portfolio of beers that will meet long term expectations for “scale” up
Brewing
• Coordinates brewing, quality and operations efforts to ensure timely procurement of raw materials for year-round beers, seasonal and specialty products.
• Challenges status quo to maintain innovation in both beer development and processes
• Responsible for supervision and technical as well as professional development of brewing team
• Ensures the quality of beers produced once in the market - setting pull dates and making sure beers maintain best condition under real world conditions
• Responsible for preventative maintenance and capital projects to ensure breweries are properly equipped and running efficiently
• Continuous improvement and monitoring of our brewery sanitation program
• Lead in maintaining a safe, creative and efficient working environment
• Responsible for annual budget and managing capital project planning
• Oversee all supply inventory needs, all finished product inventories and assume we have a streamlined ordering/production system to always produce at the last possible moment without missing a shipping deadlines
• Develops and implements appropriate financial controls and operational Key Performance Indicators
• Maintain ongoing compliance training programs for all Boston Brewing employees. Audit annually
• Assures all regulatory compliance to include TTB, EPA, OSHA, EEO, etc. by partnering with BBC Legal and HR to institute procedures, controls, documentation and monthly reporting
Safety:
• Adhere to BBC EH&S Standards and policies
• Ensure staff adheres to safety training programs and monitor employees to verify that all safety policies and procedures are in compliance.
• Develop appropriate KPI’s that can be benchmarked, reviewed and evaluated monthly
Quality Assurance of all beers
• Responsibility for ensuring that all Boston Beer products are produced to the specifications agreed upon, and communicating all changes in recipes to the appropriate team members
• Manages/conducts quality checks, process audits, and monitors production reports to ensure adherence to quality standard and performance.
• Amends/adjusts process and formulation as needed for specification adherence.
• Participate in the taste panel and required sensory training.
• Perform plant audits to ensure consistency/repeatability and achieve flavor agreement across breweries, audits to include process, formulation, and sanitation practices.
Other
• Maintains collaborative relationships across BBC and provide PR, market support and training group as needed. Participates in market visits, beer tastings/festivals, wait staff education, draft audits, beer dinners, etc as requested.
• Maintains a High Performance environment where employees feel engaged, motivated, challenged, creative and rewarded for their contributions and superior results.
What We're Looking For:
• BS in Brewing Science, Food Science and Technology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or Chemical Engineering required.
• MBA desired
• 10 years production brewery experience in Brewing Management and/or Quality Assurance Management required.
• Experience in both small scale (<20bbl batch size) and large scale production (>20,000bbl/yr) brewery operations
• Proven knowledge of brew house and cellar operations.
• Proven ability to prioritize, make knowledgeable, quick decisions in a fast-paced environment. Proven experience managing salaried and hourly staff. Competence in of Microsoft Excel, MS Word and MS Access required. Knowledge of HACCP, cGMPs, Process Improvement and Process Control.
• Proficient with computer including but not limited to, Microsoft Office, including MS Word, MS Excel.
• Prior multi-plant experiences a plus.
• Food and beverage packaging operations experience preferred.
• Programming/Instrumentation/Reliability management experience a plus.
