  • QC and Canning Manager - Heretic Brewing Company – Fairfield, CA

Are you a Heretic? Heretic Brewing Company is an award winning craft beer brewery and distillery located in Fairfield California and our family of Heretics is passionate about brewing the perfect beer. You would be joining our family of smart, funny, friendly and hardworking people as a Quality Assurance Manager. What does that mean? Well, we aren't some giant brewery, where you sit in a glass cage all day and fill out reports and manage a giant team. No, we're not a tiny brewery either, where quality might include cleaning the bathrooms every day, but this job does come with a lot of different and ever changing challenges. After all, quality is dependent on every little aspect of brewing, from the grain to the glass. Our Quality Assurance Manager needs to be involved in every aspect of the brewery. While the key focus is on the lab and canning and measuring beer quality, it also means the opportunity to grow and to learn about the rest of the business.

The core job of the Quality Assurance Manager is to develop, implement, and maintain a system of quality testing for our brewery and distillery.
    • You will update our existing SOPs and product specifications. You will expand our ability to test and measure new and existing products.
    • You will work with the rest of the team (wort production, cellaring, packaging, shipping, sales, and the tap room) to implement our quality standards. Your communication with the rest of the team in a timely and effective way is critical to our success.
    • You will focus on the canning line and making sure we keep up a high standard of quality from the beginning of the canning line to the end
    • You will develop, coordinate, and participate in product testing: microbiology, sensory, package testing.
    • Maintain a clean and well-stocked laboratory.
    • There are times when problems arise and you will be part of figuring out why and how to fix the problem.
    • Review feedback from our customers and determine the source of any issues or share in the high-fives when it is just a note telling us how awesome we are.
    • Comply with federal, state, local, and organizational laws, regulations, guidelines, and policies as it applies to the lab.
    • Hire, train, and schedule lab and other quality assurance staff as needed.
    • Every job listing also says, “Perform other duties as assigned.” Sure, but what could that possibly mean other than, “Hey, do what you’re told by your boss.” I’m pretty sure everyone at Heretic has taken out trash at one time or another. But generally, you might need to help out with some brewing task. Hey, could you help catch up on packaging beer, since someone called in sick? Could you help do a tour for the tap room? Can you be part of the Heretic family and jump in on anything that needs doing?

    Qualifications
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Two years of experience of work on or with a brewery canning line
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in the biological sciences, preferably with an emphasis in microbiology.
    • Academic or professional experience in a microbiology laboratory.
    • Two years of experience in a related field.
    • Excellent organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail.
    • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
    • A passion for and knowledge of craft beer. Homebrewing or professional brewing experience is a plus.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
    • 21 or older.
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
    • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
