    Job Description

    This role is based out of the Daleville, Virginia Brewery location. In this Microbiology focused role, the Quality Analyst will be responsible for developing, maintaining, standardizing, upholding, and enhancing our quality practices, especially those involving microbiological analysis of our product and yeast propagation system. The Quality Analyst will work closely with brewery management and team members to ensure that consistent, highest quality products are always produced. This role will report directly to the Quality Assurance Manager supporting our Discovery and Emerging Brands under the Constellation Brands Beer Division.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Data analysis, method development and optimization of traditional and molecular microbiological methods including (q-RT) PCR/endpoint PCR, DNA sequencing, and gel electrophoresis yeast identification
    • Analyze yeast health and availability for upcoming brews and communicate information to brewery management
    • Organize yeast propagation schedule, quality control sampling, and related documentation
    • Conduct regular evaluation of the quality control plan, brewery cleaning practices, and record keeping methods
    • Escalate out of specification data in a timely fashion to initiate corrective actions in collaboration with brewery management staff
    • Independently and proactively initiate, manage, document and present projects to improve quality/consistency and brewery processes
    • New product quality plan evaluation and method implementation
    • Coordination of sample collection and analysis for all microbiological testing methods, both for routine analysis as well as for troubleshooting/projects
    • Daily microbiological sampling, plating, and analysis, including but not limited to: plating (direct, filter, dilutions, streaking, etc.), use of differential media, colony identification and characterization, (q-RT) PCR/endpoint PCR, DNA sequencing
    • Clearly communicate microbiological information and standardized reports to relevant departments to drive improvements and evaluate key performance indicators
    • Packaging analysis, including but not limited to DO, CO2, N2, pressure, and overall packaging integrity
    • Assist with daily fermentation monitoring, including but not limited to: gravities, yeast cell counts/viability/vitality, and use of GC/MS to quantify VDK, acetaldehyde, as needed.
    • Active participation and assistance with the on-site sensory program
    • Maintain calibration and proper operation of laboratory equipment, ensure accuracy and reliability of measurements, and refine SOPs
    • Identify, troubleshoot, and document real-time quality issues in a fast-paced environment
    • Follow established SOPs and practice all Brewery Safety Procedures. Safely, efficiently, and effectively work to attain department and brewery goals and objectives
    • Must perform exemplary work both as part of a team, as well as independently
    • Maintain a clean, orderly, and efficient workspace/laboratory
    • Assist with other department responsibilities and perform additional duties, as needed
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Must have extensive knowledge of general microbiological methods and molecular biology methods
    • 2+ years of QA/QC laboratory experience in brewing or applicable field
    • College degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, or related field
    • Working brewing knowledge and or certification from an accredited institution (IBD, UC Davis, etc.)
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays, as necessary
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Advanced college degree in Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, Food Science, or related field
    • 1-2 years in brewing or fermentation industry
    • Working knowledge of molecular biological methods including endpoint PCR, (q-RT) PCR, and gel electrophoresis

    Physical Requirements/Work Environment
    • Ability to work at least 8 hours a day
    • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
    • Ability to work with long periods of sitting/walking/standing and crouching
    • Will work in an industrial setting with heavy moving machinery, loud noises, textured floors, and chemicals
    • Will be exposed to various weather and temperature conditions, both indoors and outdoors
