Position Summary:

This position executes all QA functions, assays and parameters for the brewery. Performs all Quality Control tests on the product at various stages of brewing and packaging. Implements and manages preventive maintenance for all equipment and facilities. Oversee statistical analysis and deviation for consistency and help implement quality improvement processes. Candidate must be enthusiastic about the brewing industry and must possess a passion for great beer and sustainability.

Essential Functions:
• Work with Head Brewer to coordinate daily, weekly and monthly QA testing
• Ensure ongoing compliance with local, national, and international standards and legislation and continue our efforts towards HACCP compliance
• Ensure QC tests are performed regularly on wort samples and finished beer for specification and microstability (plating), ensure that brewing staff performs all release parameter tests correctly
• Performs yeast propagations. Trains shift brewers to propagate yeast. Pitching management
• Track and monitor barley specifications, extract, and performance
• Dissolved Oxygen testing, data tracking and process improvements. Reviewing analysis with Plant Manager and Head brewer
• Performing all standard laboratory analysis, including sterile sampling, Bitterness, Color, Alcohol, Dissolved Oxygen.
• Collect and examine product samples during production to test them for quality, color, content, consistency, viscosity, acidity, or specific gravity
• Measure or weigh ingredients, using scales or measuring containers
• Set temperature, pressure, and time controls
• Understanding of fermentation, set points, and diacetyl rest
• Complete necessary paperwork for all brewing QA activities including recording production and test data, such as processing steps, temperature and steam readings, cooking time, and batches processed, and test results; maintain neat and accurate QA logs
• Taste and sign beer for release, based on qualitative and quantitative analysis
• Implement and track taste panel scoring. Track trends on age date reporting
• Monitor and manage Age Date Library
• Work with Brewmaster and Head Brewer to solve for any potential quality issues
• Assist with producing R&D beers and beverages, insuring a shelf stable product goes to market
• Promote the HUB brand in the professional sector and in the consumer sector when visiting bars, restaurants and stores that sell beer.
• Other duties and projects as assigned.

Licenses and/or certifications:
• ASBC Membership recommended

Experience and Education:

• 2-3 years combination of lab experience
• Minimum - course work in microbiology or lab science for breweries
• Knowledge of brewing science
• Graduate from a brewing school preferred


Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:

• Able to stand for long periods of time (up to 8-10 hours per day).
• Able to frequently lift heavy materials (minimum 55 lb. boxes shoulder high up to 50 times daily).
• Able to work in wet, tight or cramped space.
• Able to work in an environment with high noise levels
• Able to work with hazardous chemicals
• Able to frequently duck under conveyors/equipment.
• Able to occasionally climb stairs.
• Able to work in awkward positions for extended periods of time.
• Able to frequently grasp with one or both hands
• Able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (respirators, ear plugs, boots, etc)
• Able to operate dissolved gas analyzers: CO2, O2, and N2
• Exposure to very high noise levels in/around bottling line (ear protection required).
• Handling of hazardous materials.

• Exposure to pressurized vessels and transfer lines
• Exposure to particulate atmospheres
• Exposure to extremely variable temperature levels
