    The Sensory R&D Team at Boston Beer Company is responsible for using and creating sensory methods that guide development of products the drinker’s LOVE. We harness feedback from the way people taste and love learning how a drinker perceives a product. We are passionate about using statistics as a tool, as well as leveraging and developing new sensory methods. We hold our high standards while working in our fast-paced and energizing environment. We are looking for sensory professionals with an excellent openness to collaborate, innovate, and push the status quo.

    The Boston Beer Company is looking to grow within the Sensory R&D team, resulting in the following job openings in our Boston location (with flexibility to also be in either Pennsylvania or Cincinnati): Qualified candidates please email: Kathryn.milograno@bostonbeer.com
    • Sensory Managers for both Innovation & Optimization in Boston (8+ years of experience)
    • Optimization & Innovation Sensory Technologists in Boston (3+ years of experience)
    • Sensory Specialist in Boston (1+ years of experience)

    What We Are Looking For:

    Manager Positions:

    The Sensory Managers will use the highest quality data collected to guide development of the most enjoyable and highest quality products on the market as well as protect the sensory profiles as we develop more efficient ways to create them.

    They will each be responsible for leading a team of sensory professionals in building a top-tier sensory program. These roles will support current sensory professionals by coaching and mentoring them to uphold an excellent sensory standard. A key cornerstone of this role is creating an environment that encourages room for open communication and new research methods in order to learn the most from the information we gain. A keen eye to find and remove roadblocks that are preventing scientific excellence is vital to this role. The Sensory Managers will be expected understand projects across team to ensure consistency and information sharing. These positions will create a standard of what success looks like for their teams and communicate what is needed to meet these standards.
    • MS Degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology, or another related field
    • With 8-10 years or more of sensory experience
    • Minimum 2-4 years of proven leadership and management skills
    • Advanced knowledge in sensory evaluation,
    • Proficiency and applicable knowledge in statistical analysis
    • Experience coaching and mentoring others
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
    • Strong problem solving skills
    • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
    • High degree of ownership and professional commitment

    Technologist Positions:

    The Sensory Technologists will collect information about the attributes that amplifies the consumer’s love of profiles, and to use this information to guide the development of the highest quality and the most enjoyable products as we develop more efficient ways to create them. Doing this through excellent execution of consumer testing, reformulation testing, raw ingredient sensory support and a keen understanding of sensory panels and panel training. These roles will help to identify trends in the beverage industry, guide new Product Development with organoleptic insights, and build added strength to reporting consumer data. They will also help identify risks in profile shifts and guide developers by better understanding sensory attributes for each product. Scientific focus, prioritization and project management skills are essential.
    • MS Degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology or another related field required or 3 years of experience paired with BS Degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology or another related field
    • 2 years of experience in sensory analysis
    • Panel training experience a plus
    • Experience with consumer goods production sensory a plus
    • Proficiency in statistical analysis (xlstat a plus)
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required
    • Report writing and good communication skills are required
    • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
    • High degree of ownership and professional commitment
    • Experience in panel training
    • Working Knowledge of Compusenes, Red Jade, SIMS or other sensory software
    • Desired: Experience in an industry setting

    Specialist Position:

    The Sensory Specialist is responsible for assuring the timely and accurate delivery of products. The position will be responsible for ensuring materials are delivered to the appropriate line to ensure efficient operations. This includes procuring products, organization, and shipping products as needed.
    • Ability to lift at least 30 pounds (1 case of beer). Ability to stand for long periods of time (8 hour workday)
    • Working conditions: Primarily stationed in the Boston Brewery R&D lab
    • Degree in Food Science, Sensory Science, Psychology or related field preferred
    • Open to someone excited about getting hands on food science experience
    • Experience conducting consumer testing a plus
    • Proficiency in statistical analysis (xlstat a plus)
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
    • Exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
    • Report writing and good communication skills are required.
    • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast paced environment
    • High degree of ownership and professional commitment
    • Travel up to 10%
