Packaging Technician - Berkeley Yeast - San Jose, CA

Berkeley Yeast is hiring! We are looking for a detail-oriented team-player, who is excited about the intersection of beer and cutting edge science.

Who we are: We’re Berkeley Yeast, a yeast company using innovative genetic techniques to create novel brewing yeast. We engineer yeast strains to produce flavor and aroma compounds during fermentation (tropical, citrus, floral, herbaceous, dank, spicy, etc.) and to increase performance attributes (decreased off-flavors like diacetyl, faster fermentation, control over flocculation and attenuation), providing brewers with new tools for making better beer. We're working to save brewers time and money and to reduce beer’s impact on the environment.

About our San Jose facility: Our facility is a purpose-built yeast propagation plant designed to grow, package and manage quality of liquid yeast for commercial breweries and wineries. It includes a 220 barrel propagation cellar, a state-of-the-art quality assurance lab, and architecturally designed packaging process flow.

About the position: The Packaging Technician will have the primary responsibilities of transferring and packaging yeast for commercial “pitches” and shipping to our customers. The Packaging Technician also functions in a support role for the lab and propagation cellar and is key to ensuring that our team has the necessary day-to-day supplies.

Commitment to teamwork, organization, process, and sterile/aseptic technique is imperative.

    Primary duties include:
    • Aseptic handling and transfer of liquid yeast to sales package
    • Creating and boxing shipments
    • Ensuring accuracy of shipment paperwork

Secondary duties include but are not limited to:
    • Cleaning: lab and production glassware, carboys, parts and facility
    • Laboratory: making media, preparing chemical solutions, pouring plates
    • Receiving shipments
    • Preventative maintenance of facility and equipment
    • Coordinating with and assisting cellar and lab team members

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This is a physically demanding job. An ideal candidate possesses:
    • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative positive attitude
    • Ability to follow SOPs
    • Ability to employ aseptic techniques
    • Ability to work unsupervised while maintaining established safety and quality standards
    • Strong focus on safety and efficiency
    • Commitment to understanding and supporting beer and yeast quality
    • Capacity to manage multiple processes simultaneously
    • Ability to think outside the box and respond to daily challenges
    • Obsession with sanitation...
    • and of course enthusiasm and passion for beer and science!

    Requirements:
    • At least 21 years of age
    • Computer proficiency: email, documents, spreadsheets, search engines
    • Excellent record keeping
    • Ability to lift up to 55 lbs repeatedly
    • Approximately 40-45 hours per week (days are not always 9-5)

    Compensation commensurate with experience

Matching 401K, medical/dental/vision plan, paid vacation days, paid holidays
