    Three Notch’d Brewing Company is a Charlottesville, Virginia based microbrewery that is expanding quickly. The brewery is on pace to produce close to 7,000 bbls in its second year of existence and is seeking experienced and qualified candidates to fill a Production Manager role. The job will report directly to the Brew Master.


    Production Manager

    This is a new position, reporting directly to the Brewmaster. The Production Manager is the day-to-day manager of all aspects of brewery production, from materials ordering through wort production, fermentation, packaging, and quality of the product, safety, and maintenance.

    Management of Personnel


    The Production Manager:
    • Is a brewer and takes regular brewing shifts (may later become “relief brewer” role in day-to-day production)
    • Determines the schedules, shifts and duties of all brewhouse personnel, including brewers, cellar operators and packaging operators to ensure smooth operations, proper efficiency, employee well-being , safety of team members and the visiting public, and high product quality.
    • Takes the lead role in hiring new brewhouse team members and will oversee the training and ongoing development of the entire brewhouse team.
    • Will lead the brewhouse team in the development, implementation and maintenance of clear, effective and executable SOPs.
    • Will work with the Brewmaster and Assistant Brewmaster to schedule and run regular team meetings and keep clear lines of communication throughout the brewhouse team.
    • Will work with other “upstairs” personnel to keep open communications and relations between the brewhouse team and the rest of the brewery.
    • Will initially build quality control practices and oversee setup and purchase of laboratory environment. Will on-board quality control laboratory scientist and eventually hire a formal laboratory manager.

    Logistics:

    • The Production Manager schedules all brews, filtrations, and packaging runs and works directly with the Operations Department to deliver beer upon an agreed schedule.

    Quality:
    • Works closely with the Brewmaster and Laboratory Scientist / Laboratory Manager to deliver beer of the highest quality and to determine the parameters upon which the plant’s product quality assessments will be based and continually improved.
    • Is the proactive link between the findings of the laboratory and taste panels (Brewmaster to chair) and the resulting actions of the brewing department.

    Creative:
    • The Production Manager works directly with the Brewmaster to assure that Three Notch’d Brewing Company remains a creative enterprise. This involves the encouragement of the creative impulses of the brewhouse team and the creation of a working environment where creative engagement is encouraged, valued and rewarded. The Production Manager also takes the lead in taking creative projects from “ghost bottle” stage to marketable production.

    Projects:
    • Starting with the setup of our new-to-us Cask canning line from SunKing and Laboratory Setup, other brewery projects may present themselves. The Production Manager will be involved in design and implementation of these projects.

    Public Events:
    • The Production Manager is encouraged to become part of the “public face” of the brewery and get involved with our many events.

    Experience:
    • The ideal Production Manager for this job will have both start-up and Top 20 craft beer experience. A formal science and chemistry education with a professional brewers certificate a plus.
