    Buck Family Farms is a rapidly growing farm and grain processing facility situated in the heart of Maine’s primary grain growing region. Our focus is on supplying breweries, distilleries and other food and feed businesses with the highest quality Maine grains while connecting them back to the land. We are a leader in the craft malting industry, operating the largest malting facility in the Northeast.

    Malting is a scientific and responsive process, which demands constant monitoring and adjustments to maintain a high level of quality. As a Lead Maltster you will be required to learn and understand how grains in process respond to different variables and how to manipulate these variables for the desired outcome. Much like brewing and distilling, a great portion of malting is janitorial and constant cleaning is a necessity.


    Duties and Responsibilities
    • Position will consist of approximately 50% malt processing and 50% raw product processing, packaging, and other duties.
    • Operation of floor maltings, automated pneumatic maltings and steam flaking systems.
    • Monitor and adjust malting system using feedback controls and sensory analysis.
    • Inspect in-process material to verify it is within established specification.
    • Effectively share job knowledge and process changes with team members and management.
    • Perform all product transfers including steeping, loading of germination vessels, loading of kilns, unloading of kilns, etc.
    • Perform all required plant cleaning and sanitation activities.
    • Perform all required manual labor for floor malting system (raking, shoveling, etc)
    • Monitor, coordinate and expedite flow of materials within production area.
    • Notify maintenance workers of equipment malfunctions and, where capable, assists in repair.
    • Maintain product workflow records.
    • Operate packaging and grain milling equipment.
    • Change over, clean and operate seed cleaning equipment.
    • Other tasks assigned as needed.

    Position Requirements
    • 40 hours per week on a flexible schedule with some overtime/weekends required
    • Must be at least 21 years of age
    • Must have a valid driver’s license
    • Demonstrate strong commitment to achieving company goals and desire to constantly learn
    • Must be able to lift 50 lb repeatedly
    • Strong observational skills and attention to detail
    • Team player with positive attitude that displays strong ability to be flexible • Understanding of process equipment, process control, troubleshooting and repair of basic mechanical problems
    • Experience with MS office, excel, word, email, and inventory management software is preferred.
    • Organizational and system management skills
    • Knowledge of food production and brewing is preferred but not essential
