  • Carbon tank and softener rebed

Most small to mid sized breweries use a backwashing carbon tank to address chlorine/chloramine. Some also use a water softener to treat boiler or RO feedwater. We're often asked about how often this equipment needs to have the media changed out. Industry standard times for carbon tanks are every 3 to 5 years. There are exceptions but let's start with the general rule of thumb.

For water softeners, old softening resin should be removed and new resin put in place about every 5 years (if chlorinated water reaches the softener) or every 7 years if the feedwater is dechlorinated.
