Hi all,

I bought the housings pictured from the same company a couple years ago. They are both built to work with 1" NPT threaded ripple elements, which I already had extra on hand (brand is Dernord)

When I received the new element housings, the thread diameter was too big to work with the elements I had. I emailed them and they said it was because it's Chinese 1" vs. American 1" and that Dernord is cheap and their threads are inconsistent. I stated that the same elements work with the old housings so it seems like the issue is the housings, not the elements. He said that they switched to American made elements and that the new housings work with them which just left me scratching my head. How come these elements work with the old housings but not the new? Why are they all advertised as 1" NPT but ONLY the new housings seem to be the problem? Am I missing something?

And does anyone have recommendations on a decent housing I can purchase that will work with these elements? The whole point of me buying another set was for ease-at the end of the brew day, I want to take out the dirty elements and soak/clean thoroughly and immediately put in the other set and fill the kettle so I can begin heating again for the the next brew day. I don't want to have to carry two different sized elements, because I have enough to worry about and I like to keep things simple!

Hi, It doesnt look like an NPT thread. NPT thread are usually tapered so that it would fit into the coupling of your tank. Nema 4 water resistant are the most practical for cleaning purposes. Simple

I have never had a problem. The thread on the element should be 1"NPS (external thread) and the housing should be the 1" NPT (internal thread).

What you have in your hand is a DIN fitting, so a bit confusing. You want in most cases avoid anything Chinese. Contact Paul at Affordable Distillery Equipment. I bet he may be able to help you:

The part of the housing in your hand in the picture appears to be the locknut thread that screws into the housing. The threads inside of that part should match up to the 1" NPS threads on the elements. I've been using Dernord elements for years and never had a fitup issue.

Correct, the pictured housings are the ones I've been using for years with the Dernord elements.

These DO NOT work with Dernord, but do work with the elements for sale through their website, despite the fact that they are all advertised as 1" NPT.

I ended up purchasing the elements through their website and will just deal with the fact that I will have to order two different element style.s

Sounds like they changed the pitch on the threads and they are less tolerant of the elements you already had... Until more recently there wasnt very many options for all stainless stainless based 1"nps elements made in the states. The likely scenario was the older ones you have wouldnt work with the newer american elements so they changed them to suit the american made ones. I dont recall any of my older dernold elements ever having BST vs NPSL so im guessing its a slight thread pitch change.

The odd thing is they advertise "ripple element compatible" and over 90% of the all stainless ripple elements come from china.
