  • Glycol recommendation

I had a glycol leak yesterday. I need to buy about 10-gallons. I am going to Country Malt tomorrow to pick up grain and I see they have two types on their site. One says food grade for $140/5gal and the other says it is for glycol-cooled heat exchangers for about $108/5gal. I need it for my BBTs and FVs. Logic tells me that I can use the less expensive one for $108 but my logic lately has been a little blurred. I will call Country Malt in the morning but during COVID they are not really answering their phones.

I agree. That is what I used before and if necessary, I'll spend extra money to have the right stuff again. My leak came from a pressure gauge where it just pumped right out onto the floor from the loop. I just read this thread and it drives home the importance of using the right stuff: https://discussions.probrewer.com/fo...type-of-glycol

Food grade is mandatory for use in brewery product cooling systems. While you're at it, look into a marker dye for the glycol if if doesn't already have one. It makes it much, much easier to find leaks.

I got an answer about the difference between the two at Country Malt. Both are food grade. One is inhibited and the other uninhibited. Bad news is they are still both backordered. I ordered 10 gallons from Duda from Amazon. I was expecting it today and it was apparently damaged and sent back. At least that the way it sounds in the notification. I don't know if I can reorder from them or not. Still searching...

If you have a refrigeration guy, ask him to check with his vendors. United Refrigeration is a vendor in most areas of the US and they carry 5 gal buckets of 70 & 96% food grade glycol.
