  • Corrosion inhibitor for glycol system

    Hi All,

It was recommended us to use corrosion inhibitor in our glycol system by chiller supplier but those inhibitors are not non-toxic as i checked with several chemical suppliers. I know that glycol water is not in touch with beer anywhere directly but would it be problem to use something non-food grade in the system no matter what? Do you recommend to use corrosion inhibitor as well? If so, how much volume of it should be used? In our cooling system (chiller tank+GWT+pipes+glycol jackets) there will be approximately 2000-2500L glycol mixed water in total.

    Thank you

You buy the correct kind of Glycol for the application that already has the necessary inhibitor in it such as Dowfrost. You then add flourescent dye to the well when you dilute to the correct BRIX with water.

glycol chiller is actually a refrigeration system that is used to cool a bath or tub of an antifreeze called "propylene glycol", try volatile corrosion inhibitor . VCI is a mixture of special chemicals that constantly vaporize and create gases which have anti – corrosion properties.
These vapors form a very thin protective film layer around the metal surface and prevent the metal from the corrosion action. this corrosion inhibitor packaging including vci bags, vci oil, vci additives, vci powder, vci tablets, vci paper and so on.

If you cant find food grade glycol with inhibitors then you could possibly be poisoning folks in the event that your tanks develop leaks in the jackets. It’s something that can happen, even new equipment.

To provide more safety you should use a dye to color the glycol mixture. And best to use a color that is unusual for beer like blue or green. That way if you ever develop a leak and glycol gets into your beer you will see the color change and can identify the problem before serving beer that could make people sick.

If you are having trouble to find food grade inhibited glycol in turkey i would look in italy, greece, germany and austria. The wine industry uses it also and hopefully you can find it there. That is the safest solution.
