If you use too much you will get ashy taste.

      Hey there,

We use sinamar in our schwarzbier, and it darkens the wort nicely without adding any roasted or bitter flavors. We use a little over 11 lbs in a 30-bbl batch and we don't get the ashy flavors Thirsty Monk is referring to. Thirsty Monk is right though - if you add too much, you will get some ashy flavors. We add the sinimar to the boil kettle just before the boil starts. Hope this helps!

      Cheers,
      Matt

Thanks Matt — Was not quite sure when to add it.
Thirsty_Monk — We will err on the side of caution

Always tasted to me like someone melted a brown crayon in the beer...you eat with your eyes too...see a dark beer, expecting roasty flavours, get brown crayon....disappointing...
