  • MBAA Membership

    HI All:

I was wondering how many on the forum are members of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas. Is there interest out there but old "myths" are still there; such as...they play only golf; they talk over my head and so on!

How many of you really know exactly what the MBAA does, not only for large Brewers, also for Craft Brewers?

The whole MBAA has more and more shifted from being only "large Brewer" friendly to "ALL Brewer" friendly. Many of the Craft Brewers serve on different MBAA communities and Chairs, notable John Mallet on the Technical Committee, myself as Chair for the Global Emerging Issues Committee and as Chairman for the MBAA Membership. Travis Hixon of Blackstone brewery is working on the MBAA GEI on the subject of waste water for Craft Brewers.
The list goes on and on................

If you like to discuss the issue, please contact me or post here on the Forum.

    Thanks

    Fred

If you are a professional brewer, consider that this is the organization of professional brewers. The MBAA is where you learn more about brewing beyond the homebrewing myths. I've been a member for over 20 years.

      Hi Moonlight:
      Thanks for your post.

What do you think are the benefits of being a MBAA members today vs. 20 years ago?

I've been a member of the Milwaukee chapter for a year and, while I haven't been able to make it to many meetings, it's definitely been worthwhile. My first issue of the Technical Quarterly contained more useful information (for small brewers) than two years worth of ASBC journals. The Midwest Technical Conference was great as well. For me, joining the MBAA was money well-spent.

I'm a 14 year member and find the exposure to brewing professionals from pico to mega invaluable. Our NorCal chapter has a great mix of brewers of all sizes and experience. Plus the annual AB Fairfield meeting with backstage access tour is priceless. The highlight is the tasting room bar just oozing with growlers, minikegs, 12's, 22's, cubes etc.. of Norcal's finest craftbrewer offerings surrounded by the AB macro offering. The technical sessions are usually extremely well run and very informative. A very unique organization.

New England Chapter never plays golf?

I feel the mix of large brewers and smaller breweries like mine make for worthwhile discussions, a great forum for learning from each other, and of course a way to hang with good friends and colleagues.

New England Member since 2003, I think. More active in the last few years.
I am also on the Continuing Education Board for NE and we just starting to move forward. (finally)

              Hi Matthew:

Thanks for your post and I have to tell you, the Cask conditioned Night during the CBC in Boston was outstanding. You guys doing a GREAT job.
We, MBAA District Mid South, having a Hop seminar or workshop during our
"One Day Technical Conference" in November. And there, with the help of Mike Sutton and S.S. Steiner Hops, we will have a cask night to.

As all on the Forum can see, we (MBAA) have some exciding things going on.
Still, I would like to hear from more on the Forum what they think the benefits of membership are OR should be....

For those, who are not members (yest...LOLOLOL), if you would like some info and a TQ, please drop me a note.

Cheers, and keep the posts coming

              Fred

If any brewer neglects to constantly improve their knowledge and skill, they will surely be trampled by those that do. That is why the MBAA may be the most valuable asset to your brewing career. It is impossible to go to a meeting and leave without new inspirations and understandings.
As more non-macro breweries have opened and more brewers have joined the profession, the MBAA technical presentations and brewer conversations have become more relevant to those reading this board. This is not to say that even the most technical talks by macro brewers isn't relevant, because they have been amazingly insightful to me... in ways that us smaller brewers could never possibly cover in places like this forum.

Moonlight, you hit the issue right on the head. No matter if you a large Brewer or Craft Brewer, we all benefit from MBAA Membership.
One can visit the web site www.mbaa.com and visit District web site and see if there is a District near him. Each District lists their officers, date and subject of meetings etc. We also run Malting - Brewing Science courses in Madison, WI. The benefits of being a member go on and on...........

                  Cheers

How much $ is membership. I cruised the MBAA site and could only find local dues.
                    Cheers & I'm out!

I was a member in the early 90's, let it slip for a few years, and re-joined in 2006. I find that the TBQ does have good info. for brewers of all sizes, and am looking forward to attending the District NW Fall meeting this year in Bend, OR.
