  • Spent Grain Silo Insulation

We're looking into getting a spent grain silo and I was wondering what other cold weather breweries are using for insulation. Brewing in NH we usually see a week or two of near-zero temperatures each winter. I've received a quote that lists 4" of insulation. Sounds like enough to me, but I figured I see if anyone out there had some practical advice.

    Cheers,

I think the main factor is how long the moist grain sits before its hauled away. 4" foam (EPS R14, XPS R19, Poly R19) will definitely retain some heat, and depending on the overall spent grain mass it sounds like that should get it. Eventually with no heat input and even in dry, low humidity air the cold would overcome the grain before it would ever dry and lock it up.

I'll let you know this winter....I have installed one and will be looking to insulate the cone before it starts to freeze. I plan on using heat pads to prevent freezing and then insulate on top of them with some sort of closed cell insulation.
