  • CO2 dispersion in serving tank

Weird problem today that we've never had —

We accidentally "carbonated" our beer in the serving tank by pushing 60/40 (CO2/Nitro) gas through the carbonation stone instead of pure CO2. Realizing our mistake, we dumped the head pressure and started our carbonation procedure over. A sample taken from the zwickel tested at 2.6 volumes of CO2, and taste tests confirmed that it was properly carbonated.

However, when we connect the tank to the tap, beer coming out of the tap is quite flat. Even after clearing out any old beer in the line, it's still coming out flat.

I'm assuming that the beer on the bottom of the tank is undercarbed and the beer near the zwickel is properly carbed, but how/why did this happen? I could see this happening in a large tank, but ours is only 15 bbl. Any ideas how to mix up the beer?

If you are wanting to roust your beer hook up the CO2 to the carb stone and run it for 15 to 20 minutes at about 20-25 psi then check your carbonation level again. If you have a sample port that you can connect to the bottom valve of the serving tank use that to check the CO2 level. Good luck.
