        Buffalo Billed

Wild ride coming next year with all of the shortages contract or not. I know centennial came up really short at harvest. Amarillo is short, Cascade was a bit short from what I heard from one grower and I think Chinook and Palisades were on the short list as well (don't quote me on the last 2). Willamette on the other hand had a huge bumper crop, in fact entire fields were left to die on the bines.

Anyone know of a published list of hops crop shortfalls?

Contract just means you have to pay the contract price for all of what you contract, it doesn’t mean you will actually get the hops you contract for. But try to get a break when your contract price is more than the spot market. I know we are not getting near what we contracted for Amarillo or Centennial. If you can find either 9of those on the spot market... gobble them up now.

Mike - that sounds about right! We have a good range of contracts here, though... so... from 6$ to 12$ a pound for the varieties you asked about...

I couldn't find any Amarillo through contract. I was also told that I was locking up the last bit of Liberty and Crystal available, FWIW. Looks like 2012 will be full of folks without hops if they didn't contract early.

The broker I spoke with last week said that the Simcoe and Amarillo crops were dismal, much less than expected. I didn't get any of either variety. Citra he said was a little down from what they expected but I was able to get the amount I contracted for, same goes for Centennial.

Seems like it may end up being a tough year.

Interesting that 50% of the varieties and/or blends listed are single source hops only available through Hop Union…. You know that “Grower Owned Craft Specialist”
Is this an industry problem or a Hop Union problem?
