  • Brewery hose size selection

Hey all I need advice on brewery hose sizing. On a 7 bbl system using a March pump with 1.00 suction inlet and .50 outlet discharge, 1.00 tubing on tank with 1.50 TC, what size hose would you suggest for wort/ beer transfer, CIP, and blowoff. Hose runs fairly short less than 20 feet. I was thinking 1.00 for transfer and CIP, 1.50 for suction? We will eventually buy a larger pump that is all we can afford for start up. Tanks are 6 ft tall. Pump curve chart says about 2 gallon at 6 foot head.

    You need a bigger pump.

It sounds like you're using a homebrew pump, which won't work for wort transfer, let alone CIP.

Call March and have them help spec a proper pump (they have great customer service). Tell them about your system. If you plan to CIP, get your tank vendors recommended pressure/flow.

If you're going to try to find one used, reply with your CIP specs and heat exchanger details and we can figure out the minimum size that will work for you.

Try not to oversize. I purchased a good amount of 1.5 Novaflex. It's fantastic hose, but it hates making turns. I really wish I had some more 3/4.

For up to 15 bbl batches, I don't see a need for anything larger than 1" hose. You just don't need the flow rate, and like Noah said, 1.5" can be a pain to deal with. You're also more than doubling the product left in the lines unless you purge them.

            Hose size

Use a 1 1/2" suction hose and keep it as short as possible and use 1" on the discharge side of the pump. This will avoid cavitation in you pump and not be to hard to handle.

Give me a call and I can help you size a better pump. (blatant sales pitch) :-)
