  • Using Mash Tun as a Hopback

Has anyone used their mash tun as a hopback? I am curious about how you are sanitizing your kettle or preparing it for wort transfer. Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated!

    Cheers!

We use our mash tun as a hopback when we make our annual fresh hop beer. Once the kettle's full we grain out as quick as possible, then give it a really good spray down. If one were really inclined, one could do a quick caustic loop I suppose. But we don't bother, just pump the near-boiling wort into the mash tun filled with fresh hops until the kettle's empty, then start running it back through the heatx to the fermenter.

        MT as hopback

        Matt,

I do the same as Russell. False bottom in the MT works well as a filter.

We've done the same thing as well brewing a fresh hop beer for which we couldn't put the cones into our kettle. It worked very well for us.

So if people have had success with this process, why are hop backs always a sealed tank? Is it just for convenience for not having to worry about overflowing an open grant?
